Trans slipping, shaking, lost OD.... At 57 K ???

Trucks an 06 FX4 and for the last week noticed the trans was shifting odd.
And shaking when up and down shifting around 35 and at OD...

As of yesturday it won't even shift into OD... And has got much worse...

Anyone else have this problem??? Truck has 57,000 on it...

Fluid level is fine too...

What does the fluid LOOK like? Bright red or brown? How does it smell?

OD light is NOT blinking...

Fluid is not bright red but more red then brown for sure.

It did not smell burnt or unusual either...

When the vibration started both me and the passenger could feel it in my floor boards... Did this for about a week or so while shifting... And now well it's much worse.

Any ideas what it could be??

If the fluid is not bright red (same as out of the bottle) it is burnt and needs changed. If the vibration is that bad it may be too late.

ANY slipping is heat and heat to an auto trans is death. Heat and dirt are the auto trans arch nemesis.

GREAT.........

It was doing this off and on though during that time.

And while driving yesturday it would be ok then act like it got thrown in N.

Isn't service for the trans fluid not till 60 k??

I always take the truck to my local ford dealer for oil changes etc...

Surprised they have never recommended I do a tranny service...

Depending on how you drive or what conditions my service chart on my 07 says change trans fluid at 30K, 60K, 90K, 120K. Mine has 33K and is scheduled for this Thursday. I drive some dusty roads so I am going to go with that. Dealer recommended sooner. I still have warranty on trans & engine so I want to make sure if I have trouble they can't say I didn't service it.

Actually the dealer recommended a flush rather than just change. I may change my mind before Thursday on that. I think he is trying to sell the "flush conditioner" for extra $20.00.

Gotcha! Thanks for your help!

That may be what did it... Never changed it at 30K...

Don't drive real hard, lots of stop and go on the way to work or highway when I travel... I do tow not super offten but enough...

Think a flush and change could fix this or am I probably looking at trans overhaul

Yeah you will probably be OK.

Maintenance can be difficult to maintain but pays big dividends.

My opinion is stop & go is more heat than open highway or towing on the open highway. Stop & go is up and down through the gears all the time. Not much air coming through the cooler.

I made a pact with myself this truck would get maintenance and repair when it needed it not when I got a round to it. I even started me a maintenance schedule on my PC with date, mileage, what was performed.

Not a bad idea!!

Yeah, well worth a couple hundred to change the filter and fluid rather then the whole trans.

It sucks cause I've been so on top of everything else it's needed. Probably about time for plugs though too.

NO. Need to read your Warranty and Maintenance Guides people.
it does get a little wierd for the 2005 trucks though.

In that it recommends service intervals for the 4.6 trucks...but they went to 1 uniform standard in 2006.
the 5.4 tranny is sealed and has a Lifetime Fluid. Technically should never need to service Tranny fluid under normal conditions.

only if you meet the Extreme Conditions are you supposed to touch the tranny fluid. Dusty roads don't qualify as Extreme IMO.

btw, sorry to hear about your tranny. If you are already getting extreme symptoms like described, the tranny is toasted.

Doing a fluid change now might delay the inevitable slightly...but it won't cure it. I suggest you take it to the Dealership and let them look it over.

When was your truck built? After July 2006? If so, you have a 5yr/60,000 mile Powertrain Warranty

Are you talking of 05 & 06 trannys? My 07 is NOT sealed.

Any mechanic I've talked to considers dusty conditions extreme as well as any Ford owners manual I've read. To me normal is highway or street driving. Dusty, muddy, cold conditions are not normal driving.

I'll have to check the production date when I get home today.

I sure hope it's after July of 06.

If it ends up not being under the warranty and I need to fix it and pay out of pocket. What is my best option for upgrading it some what. Nothing radical just a little firmer shifts and heavier duty clutches for when I am towing.

I do plan on getting a Gryphon as well or is this a bad idea.

Hope everything works out OK for you. It seems like there is a lot of threads about issues with 05 - 06 transmissions. My bro-inlaw's 05' F150's tranny just took a dump at 50K miles.
