Super Duty Fog Light Mod

One of my cheapo Walmart foglights/driving lights hosed itself last week. The bulb burned out. So I took it apart, only to find out that the company (China/Japan Junk) soldered the bulb in place.

Anyways... time for an upgrade...

I like the square fog lights on the Super Duties, and I can't seem to find an aftermarket pair.

So why not... I'll use a quality set from Ford from a SD, plus they are quite reasonable on Ebay.

I got all the wiring there and ready to go... however... what kind of connector would go on these? I don't want to direct wire it to the light, I actually want to build a mini harness that can be disconnected, just like if it were factory.

I think it's something like this... but does anyone have a FPN?

Much appreciated!

Isn't that the plug that goes into the back of the bulb?

The SD fog lamps are listed on Sylvania's web site as 9145 bulbs.

The one you are holding looks like a 9145 bulb, but it is hard to tell, could be a 9040, which the slots in the bulb connector are different.

Yes, I just want that. I want to solder or crimp the connector up to my wires, then just plug'er in.

That's not me... I just used that picture for what I am looking for.

I need two of those type connectors, but made for the bulb for the SD Foglights.

I hope I'm not confusing anyone... :o

Confirm with the replacement guide at Sylvania.com the bulb for the MY SD that you took the lights off.

If they are 9145, there are the "harness upgrade" junk at Autozone, that is jsut a male to female version of the connector. Cut them off, and solder to your harness, and you are good to go.

You would probably have to buy the entire foglamp harness from Ford to get that connector. The harness mounts to the back of the bumper and runs to a quick disconnect near the radiator. My foglamps and harness are still mounted to my stock bumper, which I removed.

Ahh... I've seen them there before...

I'll take a quick peek tomorrow and see what I can conjure up.

I'll let you know what I come up with.

And from what I can tell, it is a 9145, because these lights are used from 99-08.

Let me know where and how you mount them.

I have been looking at the PIAA Super Duty mounting kit & 410 lights for some time, and have not come up with a good mounting option yet.

http://www.piaa.com/Lamps/Lamps-VS12.html
http://www.piaalights.com/details.ph...e=410%20SERIES

The size seemed a little large for the opening under the grille, on either side of the license plate.

I will be watching this one for some good ideas

I think I see a How-To coming up out of this one.

Well, I am going to mount them on the frame rails next to the license plate like how I had them Wal*Mart ones. I'm going to fab up the mounting brackets to work for the F150 frame. So it will be in the same location as if it were on a stock SD.

I fell in love with how Ford did that concept with them next to the license plate like that rather than in the bumper far apart. Having them far apart is too car-ish/rallyish for me like how they have it in most cars/trucks. Not to mention they are well protected in there too and they don't cast too much light on the sides. It's a superb idea, and since I tried it using the cheapies from Wal*Mart, I seen Ford's idea on it. It really helps, compared to them being spead apart. It's almost like the light is focused in front; where it should be.

Found a thread where a member did the PIAA 410s

https://www.f150online.com/forums/ap...ng-lights.html

Don't know if your lamps were mounted this way.

I had them over about an inch outwards on both sides, but pretty much the same concept.

I was thinking of the PIAA 410's, but they are too expensive for the same quality, hence I could just use an OEM Motorcraft product.

What is the wattage of the 9145 bulb? I saw places saying 45 watts to 55 watts?

I just looked, and the PIAA kit without the SD mount is ~ 200.00.

I can get the left and right fog lamp direct from Ford for 38.12 each + S/H for a 2007 MY F-250.

I am going to take a mirror and check out the back of the bumper, the SD mount to the back of the bumper

The 9145 is a 45 W bulb ( I am 98% sure, the 9140 is 40 W ).

I will look to the 9145ST Sylvania bulbs as the round ones have.

This might be easier then I thought.

Hmm... I wonder if they will mount up exactly like they would mount on a SD bumper on my F150 bumper, because there is a lip...

I can only figure that out when I get them. Unless, Sccully, would you know?

I'm really getting excited!

Oh and 45 watts is plenty! I think my cheapo lights I had were 55 watters, but they shined like they were 30 watts.

Won't have time to look until MON some time.

From the quick feel around in the opening next to the license plate, it seems to have a similar setup there. There are 2 spring nuts at the ends, that hold the trim panels on .

The top would seem to be only held on with 1 of the 2 bolts, there are not 2 side by side as the diagram above shows on the SD.

This is without visual confirmation.

Well, I got them in the mail like two days ago, but I've been like super busy.

I went to Advance Auto Parts yesterday to get a plug for a 9145 bulb, but they didn't seem to have any. So what do I do? I get creative and use a 9006 headlamp connector, and modify it.

I modified it using a Dremel (or you can use a similar tool!) with a cutting blade and carefully making the opening wider for the slits.

Here is the finished product.

Here is the finished product with the silicone gasket on.

Continued....
