In later model 2005 trucks they discontinued the very restrictive 4 cat system and its now a two cat system. The mufflers got a couple inches shorter also so they have a little more sound. The '04 - '05s have probably the quietest exhausts F150s ever had.

2009s must be a hint louder running the same cat system with a 2.75" exhaust, and the muffler is open & hollow similar to a chamber design, but its direct flowing unlike any other muffler from the past.

I have noticed that also. My '08 is louder than my '04. Both stock 5.4s.

My friend has a 2008, & his F-150 is a bit louder than the stock exhaust that WAS on my 2007!

Those with stock 2008 exhausts, if anyone is bored enough would someone measure the width & length of the stock mufflers and cats? I would be real interested to know the specs. It sounds like the 2008s have a different muffler than what was offered in previous years. I know my 2004 stock muffler was a 9x12x32".

Quite a bit louder, most every one who rides in my truck notices it. Some have asked if I had a pipes installed. I like the sound, but it lowers my mileage because I'll give it a little extra gas just to hear the pipes.

exhaust

My brother has an 06 fx4, my exhaust sounds way better.. He has driven it a few times and said mine has a little more power, i know the hp & tq numbers are the same. But, i will also say my 08 has a little more power than my 05 xlt 5.4. Still a bit sluggish though.

I have an '06 with the 5.4 and put on a single-side MagnaFlow system. Once I graduated college and started working, I decided to take it off and go back to stock. So...I ended up swapping my MagnaFlow with a stock system from an '08 and I really feel like it was louder than the stock '06. I love the sound and definitely prefer it over the MagnaFlow.
