Marble in motor at start???

I went out this morning to stat the truck to take the kid to school and it sounded like a marble was bouncing around in there. It only lasted a couple seconds then all was normal. The temp was 43 degrees out according to the dash thermometer. Was it just the driver train clatter or what.

What oil filter are you using and when was it last changed? If using a Fram filter, stop. Use the Motorcraft FL-820S. Are yo using the recommended oil weight?.

Mine was a 2000 3.0 and came from up north, rust every where. Wheels were rusted to the axles, didn't find out til I got a flat. Transmissions also went out at 50K. I kind of wanted to keep it......... so I could kill it myself.

Yes it is an 05 with a 5.4 I just hit 35k on the odo. Honestly can not tell you what oil is in it. I have only put 3k miles on it in the year I have owned it. Bought it and went to Iraq. I am changing the oil today and putting in Mobile One in.

Make sure you use an Motorcraft FL-820S filter. It is important to have a good anti-drainback valve on the filter, and the MC filter has it. Fram and some others don't.

I know this from experience!!! Anything but the FL-820S = startup rattle.

BTW, I love the explanantion of a marble in the motor, that's exactly what it sounds like!!!

Yeah I have the same noise too.....I have a 04 with about 90,000 miles on it....I have no clue what the heck it is, I always use the motorcraft filter and oil recommended for it... Whatever it is, I hope it's a cheap fix.

Since you guys know the oil filter PN, could I get a PN for the Motorcraft oil thats best for the truck? I'm gonna change my own oil and filter for the first time on this truck, just wanting to get the best I can for it.

Cam phasers and/or lash adjusters can cause a start up rattle, even with the right oil and oil filter. Mine does it from time to time as well.

Cam Phasers also makes that minor diesel sound at idle also correct? Cause my '04 does do that too. Do the brand new F150s do this also?

You can also just go to Walmart and pick up the Motorcraft Premium Synthetic Blend 5W20. They carry it in 1 and 5 quart bottles.
