Gas Milage

So I know that gas milage is going to be not so great, however I believe I'm getting less than what I should. I average about 11 mile per gallon doing city driving without my foot in it. Does anyone have suggestions on parts or anything? I've had my truck for about 3 months now and its getting alittle rough justifying the gas I use. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

damn... I think its the lift, BFGs, and the Flowmaster thats killing you. I'm 100% stock and getting 15mpg city with a Scab 5.4

edit: also, whats your gear sizes in the rear & front differentials? With all the added lift have you upgraded to larger gear to compensate with the added height?

edit again: and have you got your truck a custom tune after doing all of that?

what did you expect? the 5.4 is no gas sipper and then you put a lift and big tires?

also, did you recalibrate the ECM for the bigger tires? that makes a big difference as well

Well I bought the truck this way 3 months ago. Yes, speedo is is off, however I calculate in 10% for the tires. As far as gear size, I would assume it is stock. Would you guys recommend reprogramming the ECM, getting a superchip tuner, or putting a programmer with a chip? The guy at the dealership was going to reprogram the ECM however, its expensive and I am going to run with smaller wheels/tires during the winter. Thanks for the advise. As Far as what brand is best, I don't know.

Are you kidding?

How can you be confused at the horrible MPG's you're getting when you clearly state all the above mods?

If you want to look cool sit'n up high, you're going to have to pay a price to some degree. Nothing is free and now the gas crunch is forcing many of the "players" to rethink their strategy.....

that's normal! hate to say it.....

maybe a set of gear would help, make acceleration a little smoother and easier on the heavy truck.. Or even a well tuned truck would help mpg...

Get a tuner I was getting around 12.5 mpg in city stock and then got a tuner with the addition of a 2" AS level kit and 33" mickey thompsons and now I avg around 13.5-14.0 mpg and thats with a heavy foot

First of all, you posted on a PUBLIC forum, so get used to it.

Secondly, a tuner will not deliver as much of an improvement as a steeper gear will. Period!

Case in point (aka, real numbers) :

My mustang had a 4.30 gear in it and pulled 21mpg at 70mph with the cam/supercharger combo. I put a 3.50 gear in it to attain the MPH I was looking for in the 1/4 mile (135mph).

Guess what happened. Much to my SURPRISE, my MPG actually got MUCH worse. It dropped to 16mpg! WHY????? Because my RPM is now out of the cams efficiency range in highway driving.

So, this is effectively the same analogy as your truck having taller tires. Change the GEAR RATIO to put the trucks cam back in it's "sweet" spot.

A tuner would be icing on the cake, but the gear swap will net the largest improvement, albeit at a higher price.

Thank you... So what gear ratio would be recommended as far as having 35" tires and what is the negative side if I choose to go with smaller tires? I stopped by Summit and the service guy recommended the Granatelli Motor Sports F996517, good or not?

4.56 gears

and why bother running smaller tires? just get a Edge programmer to gain a little performance and recalibrate your ECU

I am getting 13.8 MPG and I am running 37's with stock gears. I got a K&N and a Superchip which really helped.
