Painted rims question..

I've searched....grrr. and i couldn't find what i was looking for.

My question is, i see people painting their stock xlt rims.. I saw that people are using duplicolor primer and duplicolor high preformace wheel paint..

how is this stuff holding up?.. i have a ranch, and i'm pretty hard on my truck.. my wheels stay covered in mud~.. i dont want to make the jump it they are not lasting that long~.. but damn i'd love to paint mine black!

MInes been painted for a few weeks and a ton of road salt right now on them.I washed them yesterday and they still look perfect.I also used rustoleums textured black which has a tougher finish too.But i just ordered new rims anyway so these wil be coming off now.

Mine have been painted about 2 1/2 years now, holding up fine. I used Krylon high temp paint. I use a spray wax on them every time I wash.

I used a fine wet sandpaper, just enough to scuff the surface. Used enamel reducer to remove any wax. then taped it off and sprayed. I used a Krylon engine paint that contains teflon. Just happened to be what I ran across and it sounded good. Stealth thinks I should have painted between the spokes as well, and i think that would look good, but I really like the way they look. The grey spokes on a black truck just look "faded" to me. the grey looks fine on lots of trucks, but there is so much black trim on all of them, I always wondered why Ford went with the grey. I have about 55,000 miles on them with the painted spokes.

You're welcome. Just take your time, tape it off well, and several light coats. I spent most of a Saturday on mine, but it is something that gave me a lot of satisfaction after I completed it. Only cost about $6 or $7.

I was thinking about doing mine too, I have the 18" 5 spoke that comes on the XLT chrome package. I was thinking about doing the whole wheel though, as the center of each spoke on mine isn't solid, it has a gap (essentially they are 1o spoke, I suppose). Just don't know if it would be too much black...

Those wheels look good to ma as they are. If I had them, i think I would leave them alone.

That really has a powder coat look to it. I think if I were doing a whole rim with that much exposure, i would try to powder coat. It has better durability.

It sure looks powdercoated but its not,its rustoleum textured paint from lowes or depot, its semi black.Comes out in a nice light texture to it and very hard finish. Its supposed to be chip resistant.I have had road salt on them for 2 weeks and just cleaned them and they look perfect.Just wetsand with 600 wet and dry tape up what you want exposed and shoot it.I did 3 coats.I called my powdercoater and they wanted 400 to do 4 rims.No thanks .I really did this as a test to see if like black rims,i liked it so much i ordered new rims in black teflon. So these will be coming off this week.
