New truck opportunity?
New truck opportunity?
Hey guys I currently have an 02' 2wd supercab with the 4.6L and 98,000 miles but it is very clean and already has a bunch of mods, however I may have an opportunity to get a great deal on an 04' 5.4L 4wd supercab with 42,000miles, and I have been trying to figure out if the 04's are reliable as they are the first year of the new truck and engine. The truck is a buddy/co-worker's and he says he never had a problem with it. Is there anything I should specifically look for? It is charcoal grey and if I do get it I will get a 2.5" leveling kit and 35" toyo MTs, bfg KM2', or possibly something a little less aggressive. The truck is totally stock right now...Any imput would be appreciated!
The 04s had no special issues from any other year. The only potential problem would be chaning the spark plugs as they design is poor and they are known to break off in the head. See if your buddy will pay to have it done before you buy it...if so, you're golden.
My Dad has a 2004 Lariat 4x4 5.4 and has not been to the dealer once for warranty work. I have a 2005 Lariat 4x2 5.4 and haven't had any mechanical or drive train related issues either (rear window was loose- that's it).

My 04 has only been to the dealership to have a fog light replaced, and to get a couple minor rattles taken care of, thats it. For the most part the 04's didn't have any more issues than any other year of these trucks.
my buddys 04 was bought used and he has never had any probems with it, he actually put 22's on it and lowered it and still with those big wheels and all no problems.

My advice to you is that you drive it, drive it a few times. Test it out as much as you can. Trust me..
I really hope you're kidding. The 2004s were plagued with problems compared to any other years. Please enlighten yourself and look up the TSBs for each year and find which one has the most. I had one of those 2004 F150s that was a pile of crap.

thanks for the input...I hope that the deal works out... Thumpermx113 what do you mean drive it a much as I can... and trust you, what went wrong with yours? The truck is a few hours away as he lives in Reno and I live in Sac area, but we do boat shows and other stuff. Bgf150 how do you like the toyo mts? My buddy had them on his 05' dodge with a 6" lift and 35's and they looked great. He complained that they didnt last very long but I think he got like 35K on them is that about right? I think I remember them handling very well with very little road noise. How do you like them? Now he has nitto terra grapplers which dont look as good but he thinks they will last longer.
I mean drive it as much as you can, don't drive it normal. Slow down, speed up. Just try to drive it in all different types of scenarios. What went wrong with my truck? EVERYTHING, AT LEAST TWICE !! I had too many miles on it to do the lemon law, I ended up biting the bullet and selling it and getting a 06.
PS: The Nitto Terra Grapplers probably last about the same as the Toyo M/Ts.

Some thread is floating around here with the title something along the lines of "How is your 04 150 holding up". Many people with the first released NBS 150 have posted. To expand on Thumps post first year model runs are usually very hit or miss, as you will see if you read that thread. Some have everything go wrong while others are golden. Give it a good test drive, and see what you notice. With 42k and 4 years of use any real problems should have already popped up by now.

minoy118 what are you looking to get for your truck? Are you not happy with it? I really dont need a new truck, but this truck came up as a great deal. It is not an FX4 but it soppossedly has every option available...(5.4, 4x4, etc) except leather. Mike is willing to sell the truck to me for 15 or 16K depending on how good of a deal he ends up getting on the new truck. He has never had a problem with it and getting the same truck only four door and already lifted. I am going to do the leveling kit and 35s on stock rims which I can get for about $1500 so I am figuring 17,500 tops with brand new toyo MT's. By the way BGF150 thanks for the reply...your truck looks great, what did the HD lights and grille cost? Def. would want to add those too!
Minoy I have a ton of family down in Orange/Costa Mesa so if you are serious and are willing to come close pricewise I may be seriously interested. Do you have pics? Interior and Exterior.
