Those of you who see varying mpg numbers depending upon brand may be seeing the impact of fuels spiked with ethanol. It's fairly common now to see at least 10% ethanol, but since it's added at the bulk plant, just prior to retail delivery, the actual concentration could vary considerably. And, it's usually totally hidden from the consumer. A general rule of thumb, as I understand it, is: the greater percentage of ethanol, the lower the mpg.

There are those who are much more knowledgable than I who can perhaps add to my comments, or correct me where I am wrong.

I learned this from a friend who runs a few gas stations. Ever notice that very few, if any, gas companies have their own gas tankers these days? Check out the different stations a tanker goes to. I've personally seen 1 tanker off load gas at 2 different stations, that were different brands.

Something to think about....
I have a friend who drove a tanker and he delivered gas to several different stations and verified it was all the same thing. We're about 100 miles from the tank farm and his gas is in about half the stations in town.

The gas may be the same, but the addatives used at certain top tier stations are different than that used at cheapo stations, hence the difference.

Additives package.... I've heard that one too.

Think about it. We all cry foul about many of the different additives (snake oil) that are out there. Most just lighten your wallet. But since the tanker driver (no offense towards any of these guys) adds an "additive package" all is now good?????

No way. There will be wide variations in the mix from tank to tank or station to station.

But if you're happy with what you're getting, none of this matters. But don't expect a certain fuel to do much to reduce your 5.4-3V spark plug removal risks.

I can say, without a doubt, at least from years past since it has been many years since I have worked in one, but gas stations do NOT add their own detergents to the fuel after delivery.

In this day and age with franchise stations being freer to purchase fuel from whatever jobber they can get the lowest cost from, it would not shock me at all to see a Valero tanker dropping gas at a Shell station, or vice versa... So when you grab that nozzle at your neighborhood Shell station at $.10 a gallon higher for branding and advertising, are you really getting Shell gas? (Or Chevron, or Texaco, or Sunoco, or whatever...)

Urban legend. The gasses are different from brand to brand. That explains why I get best mileage from one station to another.

I buy from two shell stations 99% of the time and the mileage is identical. When I have to buy from any other station the mileage drops significantly. How could the gasses be the same? Maybe on the lowest octane with the least or no addatives, but not with the highest octane with the most addatives.

The top companies do manufacture thier own fuel/additive packages. Im sure all the corner stores, grocery store gas stations and mom and pop places share a generic gas, but the name brand Shell, Chevron, def make thier own gas

Valero is its own brand, actually pretty decent IMO. They have some refineries here in Texas so we have them in about every corner
