2007 5.4L Beware!!

I recently bought a 2007 Screw with the 5.4L engine. I had 2,900 miles on it and it started shaking violently at idle. I thought it was just a low idle problem and needed a warranty tune up. After dealing with it for a couple of days, the check engine light went on and I finally took it to the dealer.

The dealer reported that I needed a brand new engine. He also said there was another F150 in the shop waiting for a new engine that had only 1,500 miles on it.

As the story goes, there was a bad run of thrust bearings from a Ford supplier and this was happening all over the country. The typical wait for a new engine is now 2-3 weeks. They expect that as this problem grows, there will be a 2-3 month wait for new engines.

The moral to the story is that if you are experiencing these idle problems with your new truck, take it to the dealer immediately to get in line ASAP for the new engine.

Good luck,

-- Mike --

I guess that informing the F150 comunity of this problem that Ford is keeping quiet is spam, why should I have bothered?

Dont take it personal Mike. As with any forum we have out share of trolls that come here just to make up **** or just to whine and bitch. Seems you dont have either of those issues to me though. Man, leased 7 vehicles then buy one and have problems. Very sorry to hear that, good news is though they are not slapping a band-aid on it, with a new engine the problem should be solved,

It blows that your engine has this problem. Any large scale production of anything is bound to have problems. If they're offering a new engine, I'd say that's top rate customer service. Why be pissed? Not gonna change anything. Sure, it'd be great if everything was perfect first time forever, but that's just not life. Sounds to me like you're not going to have to live with any major mechanical problems at all. I'd think you'd be giving them props for the service.

Yeah, it sucks. The good thing is that there was no arguing, they just said straight out that they would replace it with a new engine.

Easy there tiger. Just seems odd that this epidemic has gone with out notice until you joined the forum and announced it with your first post. I just bought my new 2007 a little over 2 months ago and now have over 6k with no problems whatsoever so I guess I missed this run of bad thrust bearing all over the country. It must be nice having 8 F150's in the last 16 years, you should be able to bring a lot of valuable information to the forum. Thanks for letting everyone know and hope you don't have to wait too long for your new engine.

Pissed was my first reaction but at the end of the day, I agree there is not much else I can do. They are making good. My reaction would be different if it were somthing like an alternator.

I think the real question is how many engine were assembled with this defective part?

They may or may not know how many were made. I'd think the bearing itself has an identifier on it that shows a lot or run number. Even if an alternator died, Ford doesn't make those either. Vendors have issues, and a lot of the time it's discovered by the end manufacturer. Look at the recent cruise control problem with Ford. The module isn't even made by Ford. It's Texas Instruments. As long as they're backing you, you should be all right.

Yes it is odd, I Google searched the net and also searched F150online and was surprised there there was no mention of this problem.

As for me having valuable information, I go here for my information. The major reason I bought this truck instead of leasing it was because I wanted to deck it out with aftermarket accessories. I have bought a new Kenwood 7100 radio, speakers, hard tonneau and other things for it after reading this site. Now I am looking for a bull bar.

Good luck with the engine. Sounds like you have a great dealer.

Is this a plant specific problem or were these in all engines in all plants?

Mike what is your build date? And what plant was the engine built if the 5.4 engines are even built at different plants? I ask bc I bet our build dates are close and I plan on calling Bartow on Monday to inquire about it and make a note at a minimum. I drive so much that I'll be out of the warranty in no time.
