Gas Mileage taking a dump..

Not sure what's up. Was averaging ~15-14mpg, and now I'm down to 12.2mpg on average, city driving.

28K miles. What should I check to see where I'm losing those extra few mpg's? I just filled up, and only had 262 miles on this last tank.. Not good.

Don't know if it applies to your area, but here in California the "winterized" gas is starting to show up...they call it oxygenated here. It's supposed to reduce pollution somehow. It's good for a 20% drop in my mileage, which I've brgun to see.

Yah the winter gas is special blend that doesnt burn quite as hot as summer gas does. So if its not burning as hot (meaning its able to burn sooner at colder temps) then you are making less power with less heat. Less power means you are working harder to move your heavy truck. The gas also is formulated not to seperate out as much, or condensate in the lines. Which when its below freezing could be a bad thing to have little peices of ice in your gas lines.

Winter gas? In Florida?

However this issue begun about 2 or 3 months ago. I've just been away too long to post this.

The "winter" gas has more butane in it which helps the engine crank more easily in the winter. Have you changed the fuel filter since it was new? If not try that then maybe run some injector cleaner. I hope it works.

Cleaned or replaced your air filter recently? I notice mine start dropping after about 8-10k between new filters.

Isn't it too early for fuel filter?

I was waiting for christmas for the air filter in hopes santa brings me the K&N..

After seeing some of the filters cut open at 12,000 miles, I replace mine every 15,000. I do believe that is the mileage Quintin recommends and he is not often wrong about our trucks.

Yes, I follow his advise well too.. I'll see if I can get this done. Wonder what the dealer charges for this since I already need an oil change and some other warranty items done..

WAY too much! My dealer charges about $65. I get the oil changed for about $20, tire rotation for $10. A Motorcraft filter cost me $13 at O'Riellys and the one time purchase of the special tool was $10. Takes about 10 minutes to change it. Very easy to do. The dealer or the lube place smile when you tell them you want the fuel filter changed.

I get better mileage with level 3. About 1 1/2 mpg. Enough to more than pay the extra 20 cents per gallon.

My EVO is also on level 3 and I get the same mpg as stock. I've always gotten 15-16 in town out of the big 331. Honestly, though, I just had the fuel filter changed today for the first time at 26K miles. Guilty!
