LED Instrument Illumination Upgrade
LED Instrument Illumination Upgrade
I swapped out all 5 instrument lights with LED "super white" lights. I was trying for a look similar to the look "blue/white that the navigator and the new tahoe.
Don't even bother. I immedaitely removed all the LED's and went back to the incandescant bulbs. Dash was actually DIMMER with the LED's.
Waste of 8 bucks on LEDs and 30 minutes of time. Oh well.

Two blue LEDs aimed at the cluster. You can probly get 3 if you want.
I've heard different on the LED from SuperbrightLEDs.com. My wifes 01 Escape odometer light when out so I researched the LED replacements. Over on Escapecentral the members there was saying the SuperbrightLED.com LED's are very bright and all recommending changing out all the bulbs for LED's to keep the cluster evenly lit. I got mine in yesterday and I'll be putting them in the Escape today and I'll post my results.
When done right, it can make for a nice unique cluster without brightness issues:

Id like to see a really nice blue LED setup. Im pretty sure its possible but the right combo of leds will be needed I guess. I would do it but im too lazy. Ive had a Ford for all my cars and would like to see something different than the green.
My brand was "superbright led.com"
I think the multi LED bulb clusters may be brighter but the ones needed for the 150 (1.5's) are only single led

I'm dying for my cluster to look similar to that though!!! I hate the green lighting.

dlewis1340, when you put the LEDs in, did the light "spread" to cover all of the gauge? Or did it light part of it enough but not consistently throughout? I'm not looking to get super bright, I usually keep my dash lights set a little over 1/3 brightness, mostly due to the dislike of the green, but I don't need anything brighter for my tastes.

The point was, when done right, it can turn out great, but just like with tail lights etc, using drop in replacements wont get you anywhere.
This guy did this by using a lot of custom circuits and leds to follow the needles and such. But good LEDs were also used to illuminate all the gauge cluster lights.
Using a superflux LED would probably provide far enough light to illuminate the back of the cluster if installed properly with a circuit and triggers.
This is for those interested in changing the stock green to blue.
If the insturment cluster is anything like the used on the Ford Escape then there is a thin green film behind the white face plate that makes the green color. Plus a green cover over the individual bulbs. You have to remove the needles and then gentley remove the white face which is glued down. Then sand away the thin green film. Replace the lights with your new bulbs and enjoy.
Probably not worth trying unless your prepared to buy a new cluster.

Not a bad idea, just needs softened/diffused IMO.
