That's odd because one of the things I had my truck in last week was what I say is cam phaser noise. My mechanic who is a close friend read me word for word the tsb and the knocking cam phaser issue wasn't an issue for replacement.

The TSB, 06-04-07 (which has been superseded from 05-15-08) is described as "Ticking and/or knocking noise from engine - 4.6L/5.4L 3V." What did your friend's reading of the TSB describe it as? Or what reasoning were they using for replacing the cam phaser(s)?

His reading said that the design of the phaser makes it noisy and some noise is to be expected. He read it to me from the screen as I was on the cell with him. I wouldn't think he'd be reading the wrong tsb or something.

Well, that's in the TSB too. Some noise is normal, but some ain't. It's difficult though to distinguish what Ford considers are normal or abnormal.

Mine must be on the normal sounding side I guess.

If it has mechanical failure, then yes they will change it.

Did I mention they don't do it just for noise?
What reason will they not replace it for?

The one previoiusly discussed in this thread, which if read completely would have prevented the question in the quote above from being posted.

If it's labeled as excessive, I guess. Another member here and a friend of mine are mechanics for ford and in the tsb the definition for noise related to the cam phaser is that some noise is normal, what's normal or not is up to the judgement of the individual mechanic.

What causes the cam phaser to make the noise?

Will it cause a failure in the future?

Mine started making noise here lately, I'm sure I won't find a dealer to fix the problem.

I went today and talked to the service manager about the knocking. He said they had a couple truck with faulty cam phasers. I never mentioned cam phasers, he did. I might get lucky and get em replaced.

Would like to know this as well, if you set it back to stock, can they see that it was just recently programmed? I would assume so but don't know for sure.

camphaser

Would a bad camphaser cause bad engine performance and would the check engine light come on. My truck sounds like diesel.

Saleen phases the Cam's on the S331SC as well, but for emissions and driveability purposes. They don't phase them in at wide open throttle because there isn't a horsepower increase from the phasing with the supercharger.
