New Edge to update or not
New Edge to update or not
I ordered a Edge last week and it will come tommrow. I read about how you all that have them are constantly updating them with the updates they issue. My question is should i update mine before i even install it or should i install it and run it for a while and see how things work. i plan on just keeping it on level 2 all the time since I tow about 10,000lbs a few times a week and it would be a pain to go back and forth everytime i hook up the bobcat. I am mainly installing this as a way to accurately watch temperatures (mainly transmission) as i load the truck to its max frequently.
any input appreciated.

I would update as well. There have been some changes and some additional features that have been added. EDGE said there have been no changes in the tune when I questioned the "lack of power in comparison". There has been a decrease in the RPM shifting limits on WOT and on the timing. But it has still been very good and i don't regret buying it OR updating it. In fact, I just checked this morning for updates
ok thanks i will up date it before i install it tommrow and then let the fun begin. Also has anyone found a color for the pod which will match it to the grey xlt interior at home depot or lowes or do i have to go to the stealership?
I have a unit that was in my hands before the very first update was issued. It was fully functional upon arrival. I haven't seen the need to update especially since nobody has claimed performance gains from doing so. The updates add fuel economy monitoring, but I have a Lariat for that. There may be some problems induced by the updates, and I think setting the octane is more user friendly than adjusting spark advance. I'm taking a wait and see approach to updates at this point. It ain't broke, so I ain't fixing it.
i updated mine when it first came in, couple months ago... everything went ok.. updated it this last time, 3rd time, to get the average mpg and now when i program it from stock and choose level 2 and try to enter tire size, it gives me an error, saying the option is not available......
but it will let me go to level 2 wiout any custom settings.. go figure.....

I got my unit two weeks ago and updated as soon as I got it. All went well but that AMPG thang....POS. This thing is more for show than pratical. I mean tonight's reading was at 19.2, now unless I was in engine mgmt mode (running on 4 cyn)...I know this isnt right (I know this issue been discuss..) Otherwise, it is pretty good equipment.

I bought mine with the group buy back in December and i have not updated it yet either.I really havent read thru all the posts with all the updates so i dont know what changed except the MPG display and who really cares about MPG when you have a tuner
i got it today and on the sticker it said it was manufactured 2-16-2006 so i didnt bother to update it since the up date on the site says it from 2-10-2006 so i figured i should have the last updates. It works great. Is everyone happy with running 87 octane on level 2 or should i step up and run 89 all the time, i need to paint the pod looks bad against the grey interior.
Contrary to what I posted earlier, I went ahead and tried to update it. I currently have a $365 paper weight. The update timed out. The Lightning software gives me an error message when I try to do anything, and it's just a blank screen in the truck. I've emailed tech support. I'm sooo pissed at myself for f'ing with it at this point. I have an almost full tank of 93 that I intended to have fun with, and now I might burn it all up with stock tuning. Somebody slap me if I ever try to update it again.

I downloaded the newest version of the Lightning software last night. Everything seems fine....I was going to update everything else tonight after work. The software part now has a place to change custom settings in the software and save files of different custom configurations. This should be helpful when updating in the future, you'll be able to just reload any custom tune you have saved without having to go through all the steps on the monitor.
The version notes on the Edge website for the software says that this version needed a full install. So instead of updating from the software, I just downloaded the full install(setup file) from the website to the Edge folder on my harddrive. I ran the setup file after it downloaded and everything looks to be fine. Under the Utilities drop down menu there is now the "Custom Options Editor" option. I even made 2 custom files and saved them. I will find out how everything else works tonight.
Nate, I would try not hooking up the unit to your computer and try downloading the full install for the software right from the edgeproducts website. Just install the download file to your Edge folder on your harddrive. It is a setup file, run this after it downloads and I would think the software should work fine. If evrything looks good at that point, I would then connect the unit to the computer and check for updates, it should show that your software is up to date. If your firmware and calibration needs updating, it will let you know and you can update those. if it says they are up to date also, it still gives you the option to reinstall them........which I would do. I would think if you had a problem timing out downloading earlier, that you could give this a try and might get things fixed. Also, I would give tech support a call today, even though they return my emails....it usually takes them several days, but the one time I called I got right through. I guess there is always "truck talk" tonight if that don't work.
Good luck...
