Why [on earth] would you get the 4.6L over the 5.4L ?
As a former Ford tech I wanted the proven reliability of the 4.6. I saw too many 5.4's with oil leaks from the head gaskets and blown out plugs
. The 4.6 did not have seem to have any problems! Now we're seeing low milage "NEW" 5.4's with plugs that won't come out
! Even though I made up my mind to get a 4.6 I tried both at the dealer and didn’t feel much difference between the stock engines! I'm perfectly satisfied with my truck

I was looking for a reg cab short bed w/ a V8 and A/C. I did'nt care what V8, as long as I got a V8. Plus I like the fact that the 4.6 is a reputable motor and is easy to maintain.
Just like another member said, you should be asking why [on earth] would get a V6 over a V8?
I love it and wouldnt change it, keep ooon truckin.

I got the 4.6
because mine is a company vehicle and that's what they buy.
But I love the truck - just came back from a short vacation, about 180 mile trip. She got a solid 21mpg, which I think is great for such a heavy 4WD vehicle.
And the truck now (9500 miles) is very different from when it was new- it was a dog then, much much much better now.

f1-50's aren't performance trucks even if you mod them (blow it and new suspension) then you still got a heavy *** truck.
If you wanna compare power of your old car to a truck, go find a Real performance truck the Lightning.

If mine was any weaker I would sell it, no way in hell I would have the 4.6 in a crew cab with 373's and 33 inch tires. Takes forever to pass somebody thought about changing gears but didn't want to kill the mileage but I will be getting the supercharger within 2 months
My buddy has a 4.6 super cab 2 wheel drive and we took off at the light and I was inching ahead of him even with my heavier truck and bigger tires.
My truck does pull good though I have a 26 ft center console and I don't even notice it back there.

If you are actually correct, then your truck is the exception, not the rule. But do not for one minute think that other 5.4 Ford trucks are capable of 20 mpg.

Not pulling your chain.
Different driving conditions, styles, locations, fuel, etc. really add up.
Also what one guy calls highway, the other call local.
I have seen the 4.6 get a steady 23 for 300 miles of I5. That's between fillups. The 5.4 is not a lot less fuel efficient. Some even get better around town than the 4.6.

If you don't think someone is getting the mileage they post, ask their driving conditions. A guy driving the turnpike in Kansas is gonna get way more MPG than the guy freeway hoping on designer gas in LA.
