Why [on earth] would you get the 4.6L over the 5.4L ?

Difference in cost was about 10,000 bucks.

I'm not kidding. My truck was a sales special with 23,375 sticker knocked down to 12,995.

Cheapest 5.4 they had was an XLT that even with discounts, rebates etc. was 22,995.

However I did give up power windows, power door locks and cruise control. All of which I added for under 250 bucks.
I also added a tuner, a Magnaflow and an intake, also for very little money, so my performance is very much like one of the slower 5.4 trucks.

Again, for a lot less money.

Remember, we don't all have/need/want 6000lb 4x4 trucks with seating for six.
My regular cab with mods has a higher horsepower to pound ratio than a fully loaded 4x4 Screw with a bone stock 5.4.

And if you have been following the spark plug thead, the 4.6 looks better and better.

I bought a 5.4 but did drive a loaner w/ a 4.6 for about a week and I thought it had enough power. I even towed an 18ft enclosed trailer loaded down and it pulled it with no problems (I was actually impressed with that).

So to you guys with the 4.6... don't think you made a bad choice at all. Seems they are great motors that will do what most need them to do and are extremely reliable.

Just my 2 cents.........

I wanted black reg cab, power windows, and it was the only truck within 300miles. I didnt care on engine type, the best part came after when i dynod my truck pure stock; RWHP 190 & RWTQ 240, and then seeing guys with 5.4's only dynoing at 220-240 i couldnt of been happier enough. I know i payed for 230 FWHP & 290 FWTQ.

Got mine in August as inventory was dwindling. Cost was an issue but just because of the family pricing, couldn't wait for an 06 and not know how the pricing would be. I searched ALL of western PA and the out of the 3-4 trucks I found to my liking this truck won on options and it had the 4.6. I'm not pulling houses down, towing broken down Chevy's or anything crazy so the 4.6 is A OK with me.

I got my 2005 4.6L somewhat because of cost and somewhat because of gas mileage. I'm 20 years old and in school so I need something economical that gets decent gas mileage. My previous truck, a 1990 F250 with the 5.8L and 4.10 gears got somewhere in the neighborhood of 7-10 mpg depending on my luck. I do consistantly better than my friend's truck with the 5.4L by 1-2.5 mpg. We both do mostly city driving. Also, in a race he BARELY beats me. His truck is a Supercab 6.5' bed and mine is a Regular Cab/8 ft. bed. Once I regear I will smoke his truck easily. I'm not impressed by the 3 valve 5.4 and am glad I didn't spend the extra cash for the bragging rights.

i think alot of people chose the 4.6 for reliability reasons. It has shown to be a more reliable, less maintence motor than the 5.4

81,000 flawless miles for me on my 4.6.....many more to come.

The difference between the 03 F150 and the 04+ F150 is about 625lbs more weight on the new body style in a reg cab. You get the same hp as the previous years but you get alot more truck.

Im happy with power in my 4.6 reg cab XLT. If I want to go fast, I have a Mustang.

I bought my 4.6 because it was used and I got a great deal, $15,500 for a 04 reg cab XLT with 7300 miles. The sticker on it new was $27,000.

I think the question should be why buy a V6 in these trucks.

Although in 95 the standard engine was the good ole' 300 six with a whooping 150hp. That was also the standard engine in the F250.

We have come a long way, thank GM and Dodge for that, they started this go-round of the truck hp wars.

I got my 4.6 after a bastard in a Chevy literally killed my Ranger. (see my sig). 21 year old I.T. student but till i start makin the big bucks I'm Rec. Mngr. at Wally World. Both parents had just bought brand new ones about a month before i got hit and couldn't really help me out a whole lot. Had to have something to get to school and work in. Got a hell of a deal and brought it home. Kinda wanted the bigger V-8 but the only thing they had it in that day was a couple Screws and they were a hair out of my price range. Its a 2005 STX 4.6 4x4 and just in case anybody has ever wondered about my user id on here: my Ranger was an EDGE model, no carpet, no powerr anything = less stuff to go wrong/cheaper. The STX is just like a super sized EDGE, hence the name.

My dads got a loaded 05 Screw 5.4 4x4 and as somebody else said ealier his truck can't do a whole lot with mine, running or pulling. When he starts his up on a cool morning it rattles like hell for about a minute, mine makes not a peep. He gets a little better gas mileage but thats cause he's an older guy and put puts around while I belive speed limits are more like recommendations that actual rules. I'm happy with what I've got. When I finish college and get a "real" job then I can afford to have my Cobras and 800HP mudboggers but till then I'll just keep this thing.

As for the guy in the first post, DUH. When you get out of something pushing over 400 horses almost anything you drive is gonna feel like a dog. Same thing happens when i ride my buddies Raptor, I get back on my 4x4 and it feels like the slowest thing on earth.....everything is just taken in relation to everything else.

Different things for everyone, buddy of mine just got a 4.6. I prefer the 5.4 and is what I have. Will never own a 4.6 unless I have to. I just prefer it, might as well start with as much power as possible if I can afford it. Everyone has different reasons though and to each their own.

I wanted a 5.4 but could only afford a 4.6 with the STX at the time. I wish sometimes that i had a 5.4 because when you are looking for aftermarket parts, they all cater to the bigger motor.
But the 4.6 is a proven engine. I have a 2004 so I dont have the new 4.6. Im happy with what I got though. It beats walking.

Simply because I wanted the reg. cab xlt package and I found my rig as it was being delivered right off the carrier truck. There it was, there I was BAM
I bought the beauty. I had been searching for four + months and no dealer
had a reg. cab short bed, and I lucked out on that particular day, A pal of
mine is a salesman there so when I saw it being off loaded I flew into the dealer grabbed him, wrote downthe stock #, gave him a $100. to hold it 'til
I got out of work , came back and bought it. I didn't even test drive it, though a supercab styleside with the 5.4 that I drove a couple of days before had not impressed me at all....Then again it had 400 miles on it from
others test driving it too...

I originally wanted a 5.4 but after thinking about it being a brand new engine and with the 4.6 being in so many police cars for so long, I decided to go with it. I know what it will do. It has no problem pulling my 28' travel trailer anywhere I want to go.

Well my truck was a STEAL! I think we ended up paying like 22,000. Let me remind you that is an 05 STX SuperCab 4x4, brand new. It came with nicer wheels, tint, and 6 cd mp3. Plus my parents paid for it, beggars can't be choosers. But since then I have spent about $2000, and I took off the STX stickers. I put a leveling kit, bigger m/t, glass pack exhaust, alarm, and power door locks. No one can even tell it is an STX except for the non power windows which is in my todo list. Not to mention I was reading in the supercharger turbo forum and the 4.6's LOVE boost. I am happy but by no means satisfied. I still have a lot on my to do list.

I was truly amazed at the lack of ponies and torque this truck had. It was truly horrible IMHO. In fact, I was so dissapointed that I thought twice about purchasing the 5.4L I had ordered a few short hours prior. I thought the slight engine displacement wouldn't satify my needs. The 5.4 has NOT satisfied my needs/expectations (all things considered) but I can live with it . . . and there WAS a significant difference between the two rides.

What needs has the 5.4 not satisfied. Have you hooked up to a trailer that it would not pull? Have you had a load of gravel in the bed and couldn't top a hill? I doubt it. I imagine you are disappointed in the speed and acceleration after having the GTO, but what did you expect? If you wanted a fast truck, you made the wrong decison. If you wanted a truck that gets the job done, every time, then welcome to the club.
