Post P.I.E. for dummies... XM Roady2 as well. Lots of pix, 56K beware

So you guys should be gettin' those aux input adapters by now. Not much talk on how/what folks did with them, so I'll post my install. I did the basics, but split the RCA input so I could run an ipod or something else as well.

The basic layout:

Once I cracked the dash open, I noticed this little unused harness just stuck inside the dash on the right side. Perhaps supposed to be used for the rear DVD setup? I dunno..

Borrowed a Multimeter (thanks bro!) and found a nice hot pin:

I plucked the wire from the harness, and used it to power the extra 12v plug fo rthe roady and the hot for the P.I.E. adapter as well. A simple twist on cap did the trick just right.

More coming..

The PIE adapter rests nicely in the big cave behind the dash... some 2x tape does the trick:

A little dremmel work on the dash to make the wires look nice:

I split the RCA jacks so I could plug in an ipod or something when I felt like it. I dremmeled out a little of that useless pocket, and the wire tucks nicely away when not in use, I have 3 feet to use..

The final product.

It sounds friggen' sweet. Thank god this adapter finally came out, I couldn't take anymore of the uber-crappy FM modulator sound anymore.

One other note, while I felt this was the best spot for it, when in drive the shifter does block the numbers from direct access, they can still be easily pushed. I plan to get the remote anyway, so I really didn't care. I can see the display just fine. It does not interfear with the 4x4 switch or vent.

Just some ideas for those that are not sure what to do...

Great post, sweet setup also. I was going to get that same PIE unit also, but I decided to get the Eclipse AVN5495, so I wont need the PIE unit.

The wire tap is a big "no-no" i would advise a crimped or soldered connection.

All i need is the PIE, but i like your mounting spot

dzervit, great pics and nice Bedrug I mounted my PIE using emblem tape to the inside of the panel next to the ashtray. Then I routed the jack through the ash tray/cupholder. I'm using an Ipod and it sits nicely in the "soft cup only" cup holder. Nothing special but close the ashtray/cupholder and everything is out of site.

That set-up definitely looks good. I got my PIE on Friday. I'm pretty new to doing any electrical work on my truck so I did some research and read everyone's previous posts. It looks like most people are using their cigarette lighters as the PIE power source, and figured you all were using something like this electrical tap connector since the PIE wire is 20ga and the cigarette lighter is 14ga (I think). Does that sound right? Is everybody grounding to the cigarette lighter ground wire using the same method also, or are you all attaching it to the chassis using a fork or ring lug?

I do like the drimmel work on the dash to clean up the wires, I just don't think I'm that brave to do the same just yet!!

Whos hand is that?? Looks like a workin' mans hand and we all know a computer geek like you has gotta have smooth baby hands

Oh, I would also recommend loosing that nasty wire nut and put a real crimp connector on there.

*sigh* I know, I know... I had the soldering iron out, but I didn't have the right crimp connection on hand... and the auto parts stores closed early on Sunday so cap it was. Not much power running through it and its tight so I'm no too worried.

For whoever asked, check out pie.net for the part info (FRD04-AUX) and links on where to buy.

As a quick update, I've gotta yank the dash apart due to my worst fear - a rattle. $%*@)(! I Just need to better secure the PIE adapter me thinks, everything else was zipped tied up tight. Phooey!

EDIT: I work on weekends Brew! I put on my moisturizing gloves before bed last night, and my hands are creamy, silky smooth again just the way my keyboard likes it...

So is this (meaning the PIE unit) the only way to avoid the FM modulator when using a stock unit and adding XM Radio?

I am adding a JL Audio Clean Sweep ( http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...php?page_id=94 )

to my stock 6-disc mp3 in my 2005...and I was wondering how I can get the XM to work without the FM modulation crap.

Is this the best/cheapest way to go?

The Clean Sweep is fine if your keeping your factory HU but replacing amps & speakers with high-quality stuff. The JL unit is a VERY expensive way to get an aux input working...

The PIE unit is a $90 solution to a big problem.
