Could it have been spoken better?

What & How...

P & P is the typical abbreviation for "port and polish". It's basically openning up the hole a little larger and making it nice and smooth so there is no resistance in the air passageway. I strongly recommend doing this ONLY if you have an above basic "know how" and mechanical aptitude of how your motor works and what you can and can't get away with; TB's aren't a cheap replacement if you F-up and neither are the TP sensors if they are broken.

If you own a Dremel then you can accomplish this task with the purchase of a polishing kit (about $12 at the hardware store) and a few hours time. Start with the heaviest grit and evenly go around the TB's inner walls tapering out toward the lip. DO NOT attempt to change the diameter directly around the butterfly as this will cause your motor not to run properly! You may eliminate the hard 90 degree edge in the back portion of the TB and then taper outwards making it as smooth as possible with each change of grit. It's easy to shave but takes a while to smooth. Remember not to go too thin on the inner walls as you don't want the aluminum to crack under heat conditions. Replace your TB to plenum gasket if necessary and properly reinstall the intake tubing. I do recommend removal of the TP sensor while man-handling your TB as those are expensive to replace. I smoothed the idle air port within my TB and found my truck to idle a bit smoother as well though this could simply be due to ease of air flow.

If you happen to have the 4.6L (97 & up) or the 5.4L (I believe under the 2004 model but don't quote me) I would highly recommend doing the silencer removal at the same time so that when you step back into your truck for a test drive.... it's a total joy-gasm. Best way I could get the thread back on topic!

Okay,

This thread is getting stale and I would like some new input from the people who have put some miles on this mod. Has anyone had any problems stemming from this mod? Has anyone gained any MPG worth talking about? Last but not least, how many miles have you had the silencer out? I am really wanting to do this so a big thanks to anyone with info!

still going

I bought a cold air intake off ebay before i discovered this mod. its essentially the same thing. I have ran it for a year with no ill effects. slightly improved MPGs, slight increase in power when accelerating. sounds mean though - I am glad I did it.

I've had this mod since Aug of 2005. Deeper sound, better throttle response. Since this simple little mod, I have added:
1.Headers
2.Cat-back exhaust
3.Level-Kit w' 33's
4.4.10 gears with LS
5.X-Cal II

Most people on the board would say I should have reversed the order. This is a simple and easy MOD. I'll probably pickup a CAI soon enough anyway, but this mod hasn't really needed changing until this point. If you are planning to do any of the above, I would say get the CAI. If you're not planning on modding much, this MOD should do the trick.

I cant believe i didnt know about this thread until now anyway what other free mods can i do to get more power or deeper sound from the engine?

Believe me....I'm a non-believer in most of this stuff anyhow, after fooling around with many vehicles. I was just curious what it was.

Just finishing the silencer removal in under 20 minutes. Defiantly a son-of-a-bitch to get out, but with some power (and screwdriver, sharp scissors, and some pliers), its defiantly do-able. Haven't taken it for a drive yet, about to do so tonight, and I will report back!

=p

Is this mod still valid for newer (07?) 4.6L trucks?

I ask because my OEM 4.6L intake tube looks a lot different than the ones pictured in this thread, and there doesn't appear to be a silencer inside. Maybe this is one of the changes Ford did for 07 to get the additional 17 horsepower?

4.6-liter V-8 horsepower increases from 231 to 248

So its been a few days since the removal...

I absolutely love it. I have a bit more power on acceleration, and when I lay into the gas pedal the sound is awesome!

I just did this. I found it to be easiest to put my needle nose pliers on the seams(opposite eachother) of the silencer, by twisting the pliers the seam split and made it much easier to get out.

i second this. just looked under my hood and i have the same one as you. i wonder if we could just chop the attached chamber off so that it looks like the one posted by the op, seems like i've heard about is from someone before but not sure... then just bondo the hole. anyone have thoughts on this?
