2005 4.6L Silencer Removed - What A Difference!
A must
I just yanked it of mine today, and I would have to say it did make a positive difference. The engine doesn't choke up anymore when I stomp on the gas. A very cheap, and quick mod to do on our 4.6L.
Just took mine out of my 05 4.6. I had never even thought about this mod until the post. Thanks a million to all who made this known to us all. I just took my truck for a drive, and I would say that I can actually feel a small difference. Not so much at WOT, but at low speeds the throttle response is really improved. Where my truck was extremely boggy and sluggish to respond at around 10-25mph, now it responds more quickly.
Less blockage = more airflow, which helps the system.
I would assume mileage would improve, contrary to what some have mentioned. I will let you all know.
By the way, my Edge is coming in this week!!!!

Okay, more driving has been done since I removed my silencer last night (which I used a flathead and needlenose pliers to remove in about 20 minutes).
No doubt better throttle response, and very minimal change in noise.
I was a little skeptical at first, but I am totally convinced this is a safe and easy mod (did I mention FREE!) to do to a sluggish 4.6. Before, I was almost offended at how boggy my little 4.6er drove, but now the low end bog has basically disappreared. I do have a K&N drop in, so I am sure that it helps.
So essentially, you guys helped me create an intake for the cost of my K&N filter. This site is amazingly helpful.

1) So does anyone know why Ford has this in there in the first place?
2) Will this void a warranty if it's "caught" at a dealer?
I'm diggin' the concept since I don't care about showing off any parts under the hood... and this seems to be safe.
I am however still concerned about mpg... any "latest" mpg news from those of you who've done this?
Also, is the K&N drop-in necessary? Or will the good ol' Motorcraft paper be fine?
I'm cool on sound mods, but intake and the rest is new ground for me...

Well, I went ahead and did the "pull" of this seemingly unnecessary part... trying to decide between AirHog Fram, or a K&N drop-in...
I'll throw up some pics of the pulled piece next to the outer shroud on here as soon as I get a chance...
It took me less than 20 mins... a 7mm socket to loosen the piece on both ends, a screw driver to seperate the plastic in about four spots on the "inner" tube, and a long pair of stout needle nose pliers to do "the twist" and pull it out.
Sounds throatier (<---is that a word?
) already even before the drop-in...
This will be even better if I get the results everyone here has touted... it's still in my driveway right now... will test drive tonight!

I think the reason that Ford put the silencer in there is due to the extra noise made by a straight through intake.
By the way, an update on mileage- I usually get about 15 in the city, and after having the silencer removed (remember, I have a k&n also) and a few miles with my Edge, I got 16 mpg driving like a total idiot. I have been testing 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, and going like 95. I would imagine I could squeak 17 out in the city and maybe like 20 on the highway.
Silencer removal + k&n + Edge level 2 + 89 Octane = WOW!
I would bet my little 4.6 could run against many 5.4s now.

Great mod! Took me 20 minutes to remove. Seems like a little more mid and high end. I jumped on it getting on the expressway and the hesitiation is gone. I already had the K&N but this seemed to wake it up a bit. I didn't really notice any difference in sound but that may be due to the tires and magnaflow muffler.
Answer to ? ^^^^^ people put on throttle body spacers to get more swirl in the fuel\air mix so the turbulence is what probably helps in the power aspect. Just a guess.
