2005 4.6L Silencer Removed - What A Difference!
Now im interested! Well assuming it is the "silencer" is it fair to say there is a sound change? And jpw dod you eventually manage to get it out, I just went outside to take a look and dont even know where to begin, just get a pair of pliers and start yanking?
KaNigIt, the silencer lip is seen just beyond the end of the flexible connector portions of the intake tube. I used a long flathead screwdriver to pry around the edge to unstick all the adhesive. Do this on the TB side as well, or it won't move (as I figured out after 10 minutes.) Then grab in the space left from the screwdriver with pliers and start yanking. I ended up twisting it around quite a bit with the pliers to get it out from under the lip where it sits. With enough effort it will eventually come out, at which point you really feel like you accomplished something.
You'll like the performance for sure.

I just did this for a buddy today, the best advice is getting some long need nose pliers and "twisting" this created the "O" to crush so it is easy to get out. Once it is twisted up enough then i hooked vise grips to the plastic peice. Put the vise grips in a mounted vise, grabed the outside silencer chamber and yanked hard. I did it in 5 minutes.
I've been working on the same mod on my 5.4. So far I've done basically the same thing that kd4crs did. however, I went to autozone and bought a 3 foot section of flexible black pipe and just clamped it on the existing intake and ran it to my fender. I filled all the holes in the existing intake tube with rvt gasket sealer. The next phase is to cut off the 3 silencer baffles on the tube itself. I already have the k&n drop in filter. I will post pics this weekend. BTW--just $26.00 in parts for the intake tube, and $32.00 for the k&n. Much cheaper than anything else
OK whats going on, I just pulled my intake out and the piece in the picture above is not in there
...is it possible they were left out after a certain build date or something. Its dark and I was doing this with a flashlight, I'm gonna go check it out again but I just though I'd run this by everybody.
NEVERMIND: I found it, now I'm having WWIV gettin it out

holy cr@p man that was a mother to get out. I had taken out the snorkle tube and thought I was done with it. Now should I keep the snorkle off or would it run better with it on?
On a side note, from a rolling start 30+ it pulls pretty nasty.

I just removed mine to, I tried the pry and pull method. It wasn't working so I cheated a little, I used an Xacto knife to cut the flange off the bigger end of the silencer, then set a flat blade screwdriver on the rim of the smaller end and hit the screwdriver with my hand. Slid out pretty easy. If you do this be carefull cause after i thought about it I could have accidentally cut a hole in the main intake tube. Easy duct tape fix but would look crappy. The silencer itself is a lot thinner material that the main body of the intake, its pretty easy to cut, just be carefull if you do it this way, the big boxy section of the intake doesn't seem like it would be easy to puncture but the soft rubber flexy part would slice up pretty easy. Takin this thing out really opened up the intake tube. This poses two questions #1. Why would you need an aftermarket intake after doing this, its about as free flow as it gets? and #2. Why does Ford do such stupid s*** like choke a vehicle down for no good reason?
I pulled the tube off that passes into the fender too. That opens the intake up more (2" inch hole to a 3") I've seen several people that have cut on their filter box but i'm gonna leave mine the way it is, I have a bad habit of pressure washing my engine and I think I'm better off leaving my filter cover in place to keep it from getting soaked. I think its plenty open enough this way and it protects your engine from washing and road mist when its raining.
Im would like to attempt this stunt, but i dont know if it is same work needed on my 03 4.6
So if someone knows if it is the same and can let me know that would be great since im moving some furniture across texas on friday a little more power means better gas mileage. Well maybe just compinsate for the weight of the furniture.
Thanks great information so far.

Noname05, glad you got it out! Hope you're liking the difference.
By snorkel do you mean the part from airbox to fender? If you do I'm keeping it on. I want to pull cold air exclusively from outside rather than underhood engine air. I base this off a study at fordtruckworld.com done on the K&N, Airaid and Volant (hood closed). Though the numbers were not the best of the three on the Volant, it had the most consistent gains (same gains on every dyno run) because it was a sealed cold air box. The other two would pull more horsepower one run and lose the next because of underhood temperature fluctuations. I'm considering opening the snorkel up to a 3 or 4 inch pipe into the fender for increased flow, similar to the DVW CAI seen on the 5.4s. If you run a K&N with the silencer removed, you basically have a Volant CAI minus the $200+ pricetag.
Asinatra, once again, you the man!
