Question Fuel Filter

How in the world do you change a fuel filter on a 2004 F150 4x4 Supercrew? When do i need to change my tranny filter and fluid? I keep on reading different things. I cant find a repair manual for my truck anywhere. Any kind of help will be nice.

Your 04 uses same filter as previous model with one change. First of all, you have to pick up a fuel filter removal tool. I was able to find it at NAPA (cant remember it, but I'll search for it soon). One difference with 04 is that one side has blue plastic retainer clip. The way you remove this piece is, you have to lift the center piece up and away while pushing down on the outer piece. Email me if you need that NAPA part number

I read somewhere that the new trannys on these trucks had a lifetime transmission fluid. no changes. but in reading the scheduled maintenance guide. is says change the transmission fluid at 30,000 miles if your vehicle is equipped with ax4s, 4f50n, 4r100, 4f27e. I have no idea what those numbers mean. maybe they are transmission types or maybe transmission fluid types. and how am I to know if my vehicles is equipt so. I think I will look into this some more to see if I can find any info. any one that knows please let us know. thanks.

The rear diffs have been called maintenance free, but I haven't heard or read that about the tranny.

No tranny fluid that I am aware of is bullet proof, and the MAX I would go is 50K on the same tranny fluid. You need to remember that tranny fluid is subjected to horrendous pressure, and the resulting heat will degrade the fluid over time. It's pretty cheap to change your tranny fluid every 30K (for me) or 50K for those who sqeeze the eagle till it craps, compared to the expense of replacing the whole tranny later.

ALL Fluids degrade.

Even though the rear diff is supposed to have a lifetime fluid, I will still be replacing it every 50K. But I believe the manual states it's good for the life of the vehicle.

I can't find the web sight I got this from back in 03 when I bought my truck

I’m still going to have mine professionally flushed and a fresh filter installed around 30K or so

I did a little searching and it looks like those are transmission types I think. our transmission types are either the 4r75e or the 4r70e. neither is listed in the maintainance guide as needing changed at 30,000 intervals. so am I to assume you don't have to change the fluid in our transmissions.

Can’t find it. I cut and pasted that back in October of 03 when I bought my truck. I was able to fine other reference to (lifetime fluid & maintenance free) by doing a search on 4R7E transmission maintenance

I was going through the scheduled maintainance guide and it only listed the transmission fluid changes for the transmissions listed above not ours untill you get to the 150,000 mile mark then it sait just to change the transmission fluid. so I am assuming the 150,000 mark is the recomended time to change the fluid in our transmissions. now that I think about it I did read that on fords web site back whan I was researching this truck before I bought it.
