gas mileage, still sucks

guess what guys, after a tank of 80% highway driving, i got my all time highest gas mileage. 12.5 MPG!!!!!!! and the dealer still says nothings wrong with my truck... can i unplug half the fuel injectors to make it better? oh, wait, the trucks slow enough of the line as it is.. lol... and to make it worse, gas is going up again here, paid 2.49 for 87..

maybe i should just forget the mpg. mod the eaton m90 blower off of my baja bug to work on my truck, get a little more pep out of it...

Sounds like you have a lemon there. The guys with 5.4s log close to 20 MPG (and sometimes over) on the highway. On my 4.6L I get almost 17 in town when I don't run air conditioning and drive like a grandma. Air on, abusing it like I am I get 15.5 .

Finished the first tank of gas through my new truck. 1/3 of it was interstate bringing it home and the rest was all city and it got aroudn 11mpg... yeah... I'm really hoping after mine breaks in it gets better because if this is the mileage I'm getting, then I should have just gotten a Lightning.

I can pull close to 23m.p.g with my 04 5.4 reg cab long box 4by..have to stay right at 60 mph...355 LTD slip....give it some more time to break in, tire pressure, dirty air filter, driving habits..all add up..Once you start driving to conserve flue you will be surprised to find the f-150 is good on gas, 6000 LBS + truck is allways gonna be thirsty.

I feel bad for you guys getting bad mileage, ive gotten 17 on average after about 8k miles. I drive with a fairly heavy foot too, I could probably squeeze out a tank at 20 mpg if I realy babied it.

all the dealership did was check the mileage with a computer thing.. they got it up to 13 mpg on some country roads. they said nothing is wrong with it.. im wondering about how the computer checks it. im thinking it goes by how much fuel the truck should be using(based on throttle position and rpm), but not by how much fuel the truck is actually using. any one know for sure?? or even as to how the message center in the lariats computes it. im really starting to get sick of this horrible gas mileage.

Your mileage may be a little on the low side but I'd say it's well within normal for a 4x4 extended cab truck. Anyone who says they get 20 with a similar setup...well I won't say they're stretching the truth but I don't know how they do it. Mine has been right around 13 mpg for over 16K miles. I drive however I want and run the air all the time. I'm not about to sacrifice comfort for another mpg or two. If I wanted to do that I'd have bought a civic hybrid.

Do you have the 5.4?

I do, and I drive like a 20 year old who likes to shift into third right outta the neighborhood. Lets see, on my tank, under 24 gallons (23.5 I think), I'll be lucky to break 200 miles outta it. Granted, it will always see WOT till I gotta hit the brakes, but I have little hi-way miles during the summer. I'm lucky to get around 10 MPG, but if that's what it is, you gotta live with it. Atleast to me, it's worth it. Atleast to stomp the gas.

You could never bring it above 2K RPM, run without AC, take off extra weight, and get some better mileage I guess....

Ofcourse, I'm in GA, right around the cheapest gas in the damn country.

And I'm still planning on a 2 door 4 cylinder 5 speed to drive around for a good bit of reasons.

Uh.... if you are really worried about gas mileage, don't but a V8 truck.

Wink

I drive rather gently with the AC on and with 2/3 highway and 1/3 local driving (we don't have cities around here), I average around 17 MPG with my 5.4 with 3.73. I found a reflash, disconnecting the battery so the computer could relearn my "new" driving habits and my new driving habits made a considerable difference. I get around 14 with all local driving and I can get just bout the EPA rating of 18 on the highway.

My '04 5.4l Scab 4x2 w/3.55 diff. can easily get 430 mile per fillup. At 25 gallons that means that I am averaging 17.2mpg. This is about equal to the mpg that I was getting with my Jeep Cherokee 4.0l.

As for those of you pissing and moaning about the F150 for not having enough power then I have only one question... Why the hell did you buy one?

as to complaining about it being a complete dog, i didnt buy the truck, my parents went and got it without me knowing, they didnt know it would get worse gas mileage than my lifted and seriously modded 92 yukon. i really wanted the 250 with a powerstroke, but we take what we get and can afford the payments on, i cant afford 600 a month for the super duty.

Babying it makes it worse. I just started driving more aggressively (not that I didn't accel off the line before ) and my fuel economy went up almost 1mpg. Trucks don't seem to like being babied when it comes to fuel economy. My Rangers were the same way.
