Screw cab 100% of the time for me.
I've worked my Screw Lariat like it was a 8' Xcab XLT and it never has failed me. Off road trails, home depot, 4x8 sheetrock you name it. She tows and hauls everything I need. Oh yea and the kids watch a DVD while the wife and I sit on leather seats with our auto temp control. Ahh the good life.
Don't just get a scew get a Lariat too....

I had a '98 SuperCab and now I have a '05 SuperCrew. I upgraded to the Crew due to the 2 kids and one more on the way. The Crew cab is just easier to get the kids in and out of and I actually like the regular doors better than the suicide dorrs for loading anything into the back seat.
I always hated the suicide doors in parking lots when someone was parked next to me. Once you go it opened it was tough to get long or large bulky item into the back seat of the SCab because you have to swing it around the suicide door.

And, Vader, since you brought it up...I got an STX cause it was cheaper (rebates) than the XL. Otherwise, it would have been XL all the way. If I wanted a luxury vehicle, I sure wouldn't buy a truck. Rubber floors for muddy/snowy boots ROCK!

True, try stuffing a refrigerator to take to your kids dorm, in a Expy. Or bring home a washer.
I think with the addition of a bed extender, there is not a lot of homeowner uses you can't do with the SuperCrew.
The little SportTrac is a good idea, done poorly. I thought about one, but too many people where too unhappy with them. The extra comfort and room in my truck is great though, so I am glad I got the 'real truck'.

I've heard Lariats aren't real trucks or screws aren't real trucks, etc.
My Lariat Screw with its small 5'5 bed will allow me to handle just about everything that an XL 8' can do. I thrown in my spare floor mats and take it anywhere I want to. Granted I cant open the doors and hose it out and I am careful about scratches but dang if I wanted that much of a beater I'd have bought a used truck.
Do I baby her....yep.
Does she have leather and every other gadget Ford could put in her...yep.
Is she a truck and do I work her like one....yep.
I just do it in style and luxury...
Yeah, I get ya, Vader...I like the King Ranch leather myself, I'd just feel bad about using a high end truck for work...having to worry about things, having everyone who gets in worry about dirty feet, etc. It's like my Jeep...a lot of Jeep owners I know love to show and shine...mine's got as much mud inside as outside.
Just glad you're not one of those guys who drives a pretty truck, then tows the cheap little cargo trailer along because "nothing goes in the bed..." If you don't use the truck bed, whatever size it is, then it's worthless, and you should have bought something that makes more sense for your needs.
As far as the truck vs SUV/other argument... A whole lot of people don't buy vehicles they can actually use. One of my friends does a 100+ mile commute in a Chevy Suburban...she's single, and never uses more than the passenger seat (when I'm in it). An old roommate had a Mazda 626...he's a drummer. I can't tell you the times I saw his Mazda headed down the road with his kick drum strapped on the roof because there wasn't any more room inside. My friend Tom bought a pickup at my suggestion (cause I use my bed constantly...) and ended up trading it for a Jeep Cherokee because the interior seating for five plus lockable cargo space was more usable to him than a pickup bed was. My Uncle has a Chevy Avalanche, and LOVES it, because it's such a flexible vehicle. Unfortunately, as I often tell him, it's a Chevy, and therefore sucks.
I know (and agree with) the freedom to drive what you want...but I just wonder about the thought processes of those who buy vehicles that don't suit their needs.

Yeah, yeah, your 5.5 foot beds can do all . . . until you need to move something as simple as a mattress or bookcase. Or a dresser, or a couch, or a lot of other household furniture that's larger than 5.5 feet. Sure you can argue to rent a U-haul, but I moved in my sister and her husband in 1 day with just the good ol' 8-foot bed XL. And 10/4 on the rubber floors! I'm never getting carpet in a truck again!
PS: You can't fit a yard of gravel for a retaining wall back there either. My truck likes to work.

PS: I'm not dumping on Scab/Screw owners, I just really do not like short beds, that's all! And now for something we can all agree on. These trucks ride like they're driving on silk. I can't believe how smooth my truck is!
