gas mileage

ok, some of you may have noticed i've been complaining about getting like 11-12 mpg, city and highway. i dont race it around town, i actually take it pretty easy. today i took it to the dealer, left it there all day. and all they did was hook it up to this laptop thing that shows mpg. they took it on a 5 mile loop, 35-55 mph with 4 stop signs. taking it around the loop twice the computer showed 13 mpg. they told me this was average mpg for the truck, WTF? i have a 5.4 fx4 SCAB with 3.73 gears. sticker average for city is 14!! they pretty much said this is what you get, get over it. no reflash or any attempt to make it better. anyone know how this computer thing works?? it read vacuum vs. mph or what?

your truck is getting the same mpg as mine. I think the dealer is right. I do know I have the a fuel/air mixture gauge the tells me that the engine tends to run on the lean side most of the time. this tells me the engine is not burning excess gas. I guess it just takes alot of gass to push these heavy Fx4's arround. especially in stop and go city driveing.

It reads the CAN bus, the info that is sent to the PCM. It's the same info that I get in my Scangauge. They could have used a Scangauge itself, and not have to carry a dang laptop.
I think they don't really care what your mileage is, they already got paid for the truck. I would try another dealer.

takotruckin - I know we talked a bit about this on another thread, and I am one of the lucky ones who gets better mileage. The tsb out there 4-21-14 I think, and it is free if you go to your dealer and mention the bad mileage you are experiencing. Of course that was from my dealership. I am having mine done on Saturday.....

I’ve had my truck since October 03, it’s go approximately 22,000 miles and I get a solid 16mpg local driving. I don’t feather foot it either.

I feather my 05 SC FX4, never over 2000rpm. I'm getting 11.4mpg & 14mpg on the highway. Only thing it has going for it so far is the 5 star crash rateing which I tested out on my 04.

I get the same, 04 Screw FX4, found I get almost 1 mpg better with a K&N Filter. Just take it easy, and stop calculating your milage...You'll be much happier

so it is the fx4 's that seem to get 11-12 mpg. I do find it hard to believe any one gets 16 mpg's city driveing. I have never gotten better than 16 mpg on the highway. I think its the computer saying 16 mpg's. I bet if you did the calculations you would find differant numbers.

What the sticker also says, is:

Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits and vehicle's condition. Results reported to EPA indicate that the majority of vehicles with these estimates will achieve between 11 and 17 mpg in the city and between 15 and 21 mpg on the highway.
For Comparison Shopping all vehicles classified as STANDARD PICKUP have been issued mileage ratings from 09 to 24 mpg city and 12 to 29 mpg highway.

So...maybe what they should have said is: This is what you will probably get. It's not like they promised you would always get 14, is it?

You ain't wrong to suggest always do the calculations. That's why the trip OD is there. Don't fill up without it.

That said, my Scangauge is not far off, maybe 1 mpg on short runs, but about .3-.4 on a tank. And it is consistent, so I always figure it as the adjusted to fill up amount.

But on the never getting better than 16 on the highway, weight doesn't make much difference at freeway speed, steady cruising. Do you cruise fast? Pass a LOT? or are you at high altitude, run with four windows down, etc?

Because 16 on the freeway does not sound very good.

2005 FX4.... average 15 mpg. I could get better mileage if I laid off the gas.

The message center usually says between 16 and 16.8-mpg per tankful; I reset it every fill up. I cross reference that with the numbers on the trip meter and gallons actually used and basically come up with 16.2mpg on average.

The local driving conditions around here are mild; traffic jams are far and few in-between, usually only when there has been an accident. The road conditions are fair and the terrain is flat. The biggest hill you climb around here is a speed bump.
