I am just wondering how the truck knows if someone is in the passengers seat to send the seatbelt warning?

I am in no way an idiot, but it just seems weird that it only goes off when someone is in the seat.

 

There's a weight sensor in the bottom cushion. It activates if anything over about 20lbs is in the seat. Same thing works the air bag sensor.

 

Makes sense and is a very innovative way to do it. All car companies should take a note from Ford. It only makes sense.

The only thing that bothers me about that passenger seat is if the passenger lifts up any weight while sitting in the seat, my dumb air bad light goes off on the dash that says air bag is off. I have freinds in the truck that can't seem to sit still I don't like that big long yellow light coming on saying the passenger side air bag is off until they sit right in the seat again.

 

Are you sure its 20lbs?? I was seeing a girl that weighs about 90lbs (soaking wet) and she didnt weigh enough to set it off.

 

it's actually anything over 10lbs. that triggers the sensor.

 

I read that the trigger weight was 100lbs. I think I read it in the manual.

 

I would have to guess 100lbs. With her sitting there, NOTHING, with her sitting there and her purse in her lap, it worked.

 

The dealer told me anything over 60 lbs will set it off.

 

i also thought it was over 60 pounds but it may be over 100. Thats to make sure its not a car seat or small child in the front.

 

Boy thats a good question. I do know that my brief case or a weeks worth of drycleaning laying in the seat will trigger the light. I'm betting its 20 or so pounds, at least in my truck it is.

 

I liked the manual shut off like my 99 had. My 11 year old son weighs about 80 lbs and I would rather have the airbag deactivated.

Yes, I know I could put him in the back, but you know how 11 year olds can be, wanting to grow up before their parents want them to.

 

Mine goes off with my laptop bag in the seat. It's just a canvas Eddie Bauer bag, so with the bag, laptop, pens, and a couple of spiral notebooks, it couldn't weigh more than 20 pounds.

 

Ok, did a little scientific research on this last night for my fellow forum buddies! Took a small bathroom scale and put in right front seat with engine running. Stood on right side nerf bar and slowly applied weight to scale. At 20 lbs exactly the air bag light came on...kept pressing and at exactly 85 lbs the light went back off. So the theory is any child between 20 and 85 lbs will shut off right front bag. Any lard a** over 85 lbs like me will turn bag and seat belt chime back on. Gotta love technology
