live near orlando? fla

hey well i should be getting my tires and rims within the next couple weeks. I have now figured i might as well re-gear since a couple of people i have talked to have seem to have convinced me that it is in my best interest. I was wondering if anyone knows a shop, works in a shop, or has a friend that works in a shop that i would get a good deal on regearing to 4.56's I just know alot of places will try and rip me off. Its a 4x2 so only one set will be needed also does anyone know about how much i should expect to pay.

What size tires and wheels are you going with? 4.56s seem really low to me for a 2wd if your tires are going to be near stock height and driven at highway speed much. I had 3.96s in my last Ram and they worked pretty sweet.

OK...with the larger tires the 4.56s are a good choice.

Boy am I glad I found your post....

I am the perfect person to talk to about a gear swap in Orlando!!

I just did 4.56s and had Lamotta Performance in Longwood install them. If you don't know about them, they are a Mustang shop run by an ex-Ford tech, Jake Lamotta. I paid $300 for my rear axle and $400 for my front. They are the ONLY place I'd go for a R&P install!! I went with Superior gears for the rear, and I am very pleased so far. I also bought them from Summitt.

BTW...4.56s ROCK on the stock 32" 4WD tires!!!

Check out this post...https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...hreadid=175410

(I cannot get this link to display the whole thing... it adds the ... crap and makes it not work)

Also for you or any one in the area, I am getting a few people together to ride out to the Ocala National Forrest shortly after Thanksgiving to some wqheelin if you are interested.

Dont be too full of yourself

Highway get 4.10's

Street ONLY 4.56

pure and simple, but if you want some power go 4.56, but just remember this is going to be one mod that will never ever pay for itself

Why does everyone fear the gear??? You guys are gear *****!

I was the perfect person to ask because I JUST had my gears done by one of the best shops in the CFL area.

Unless the majority of your driving is spent on the highway at 80+ MPH, 4.56s are the answer. Is a 3.73 in a mustang a super low gear like you make the 4.56 sound in the F-150????? If you say no, then you need to crunch some numbers. The stock 3.73 in a 4WD F-150 (32" stock tires) is equal to a mustang with a 3.08 gear. The same truck with a 4.56 is equal in gearing to a 3.73 in a mustang. Now, a 4.56 is a crazy low gear for a 25.8" tall tire Mustang, but not a truck. I only turn 2450 RPM at 75 mph. All 03 and 04 Mach 1 and Cobras came stock with a 3.55 gear. This is closest in comparison to a 4.30 gear in a 32" tire F-150. After doing quite a few tests, I am getting 1 mph HIGHER in the city and only .5 mph less on the highway, and I drive around 75 mph. Fuel economy on the highway is based on wind drag more than it is RPM, especially with the efficient modular ford engines. ANYONE doing 33 or 35" tall tires should consider 4.56s before 4.10s. If you do the majority of your driving in town, the gears WILL pay for themselves.

Anyone who drives my truck now, who hasn't driven a new F-150 before, doesn't even know that it has 4.56s...to them it feels normal. Ford dropped the ball on this one. The F-150 is a dog because of it's stock gears. In comparison our trucks would need a 4.56 to equal the same final gear ratio as the titan (except for OD obviously). Turning all of 450 RPM more on the highway is not a big deal in order to get 'closer to titan' power.

Ford dropped the ball on this one. The F-150 is a dog because of it's stock gears.
What gears did you have stock? I have 3.73 with 33" tires and my truck has more than enough power. Not a dog off the line by a long shot. Ford dropping he ball? I don't think so. Remember they have CAFE to deal with. Don't you think that if they could get better performance AND better mileage by putting in lower gears they would jump on it in a New York minute? Some people buy these big trucks and want them to run like a Mustang.

No, you're missing the point. The only way to get our trucks to perform remotely close to a titan is through rear end gearing. If ford DIDN'T drop the ball, the tranny would have had better gearing, or at least be a 5 speed so you wouldn't need a super low rear gear. The titan has much lower gearing in the tranny down low, as well as much closer gear spacing due to the 5 speed auto.

I'm not saying our trucks should perform like a Mustang...again, you're missing the point. Everyone thinks a 4.56 is some scary gear.....when you compare it to a mustang, it's NOT. I AM saying that our trucks should be closer in power/acceleration to the competition.....why shouldn't it?????? You really think that your truck being able to go nearly 90 mph in 2nd gear is normal? Have you actually used your truck for towing? I understand there are restrictions on fuel economy, but Ford spending some money on a 5 speed auto will give the truck much better acceleration, yet allows you to keep a tall enough rear gear to keep the tree huggers happy, as well as the people who think a truck should get civic fuel economy.

These ARE pickup trucks. Do you really care if a Titan can pull you off the line? If so buy a Lightning. I could give a crap if some other truck is faster 0 to 60. I think my truck performs great. If a Titan is faster, WHOOPTY FREAKIN" DO.

Oh yeah, the Titan is Fugly.

Red Wing Nut,

Have you actually driven one? I don't need my truck to be a race car...I have two mustangs already for that. But when our truck is the slowest truck in its category, except for the 5.3 chebby, it's common sense to want to change that. It may feel fast to you, but drive a titan or a dodge and check back with me. Our trucks rule every other category EXCEPT that...why not improve it???
