First time out on a tow.
First time out on a tow.
We'll, I did my first tow with the truck (W/3.73's). Have 1,400 miles on it and not overly impressed with towing power on its maiden 200 mile round trip. I had a 1998 F150 2wd Lariat (W/3.73's)that I used before. It seemed to pull better. Hopefully as the engine breaks in it will get better. How much does having 4wd effect towing performace? Other than that braking is better and the ride is still tops, even with a trailer. Trailer weight is 1800 lbs and the jeep is around 3500-4000. Also wondering if Superchips would help out, although shift points seem fine to me.
Thursday I leave for Moab which is a 700 mile round trip. I'm even going to try and get it out on some of the milder trails if time permits.

I have a 04 Screw (5.4, 3.73's) and I have pulled several trailers with it and am very impressed. The heaviest things I have pulled are a Ditch Witch (5000lbs) and a Kubota tractor (5500lbs with trailer). My Screw pulled them great and was more stable than my last 2 trucks (2000 F150 Scab 5.4,3.55's, 1995 F150Scab 351, 3.73's). I dont know why, but this truckjust seems so much more truck than those other 2, not taking anything away from them. I really think that Ford has made the 04's that much better. My dad has a 04 Super Duty, but thats another story all together. I am getting ready for about a 700 mile trip pulling a 31 foot travel trailer (Talladega) and will let yall know how it does on that trip. I cant wait!
Don't get me wrong, I love my new truck and will not go back to my old one. Just seems a little weaker in the pull area and hoping that it needs some break in time. Can't image that 4wd would be a big factor. By the way, mild grades actually feel better than my old truck, its the 5-7% grades that I feel weaker. Could it be that the gear ratio's in the auto tranny have also changed? Maybe its just me. Looking for your opinions to see if it's me or the truck.

See how it does after it breaks in. I have about 10k on mine and really notice a dieefrance from when it was new. I pull about 10,000 lbs boat (gallery) and although I am not going to set any speed records, it does just fine.
No problem pulling with mine, 3.55 rear end with 10,000 miles.
Pictures in gallery under "fishing pictures". Mine is not 10,000 lbs., but still pulls with not much notice that it's there.
Maybe this can be a "show what you tow" thread.

I sometimes pull a 1500 lbs trailer and a broken car on it, so figure around 5-6000 lbs with no problems. 3.55 LS rear, with a 2WD Supercab. I wish I took some pictures when I had something hooked up to it, I'll do it next time around.

I pull a 26ft enclosed snowmachine trailer with mine about 7000lbs fully loaded and it tows great, no movement from the trailer gets transferd to the truck. only complaint is that it does seem a little underpowered going up hills, but this could be that im coming from a 2500 duramax diesel.
no problems pulling my 26' fifth wheel camper. dry weight 8200lbs
don't get me wrong you know its back there, flat out on the free ways 60mph 2200rpm and have gotten as high as13mpg 12000 miles on mine fx4 3:55s

Your are killing me with that kind of feed back .I just bought this last week.
So I could tow this.
I wont be getting a trailer until spring to do any towing the jeep.It will be broken in then and I will put a 1714 tune on for towing so I am hoping it wont make me regret not getting a powerstroke.
I just got line X done today and put in a xm roady 2 and pioneer headunit over the weekend. This weekend I plan on doing one 10" sub.
My wife hates the fabric on the seats so in a couple of weeks it we be off to get an custom leather job done.

Those are nice rigs, elf1fiddy.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've never put mine on a scale before to see how heavy it is with a trailer and load, but I'd guestimate the most I've had hooked to mine was about 6000 lbs. Yeah, I know it's back there, but to me, I've got enough oomph to where it's not annoying or dragging me down or anything.

I've pulled my boat to the lake several times with my FX4 SCrew (5.4, 3.73). Compared to my '98 with the 5.4 it's a night and day difference. Going up the hills with the '98 I had it floored most of the way. However, with the "04 I hardly notice I'm towing anything at all. Also, going back down the brakes on my '98 would be smokin'. On the '04 there is no smell at all. The '04 makes me glad I didn't buy an F-250 just to tow my boat.
Thats sweet YJ and TJ!
