grooved rotors

04 FX4 has 5000 miles rotors are grooved what i can see a easy .030 deep. Dealer just got of the phone explaining to me the new high metallic pads . Thats ok but my rotors should not groove at this mileage.Has anyone had this experience with his Dealer. Also it has a brake squeek since day one at allmost every stop thats what i took it in for. I'm not a hard braker my 99 had 60,000miles on original brakes when traded in.

Mine is the same. I am going to take it in next week or the week after right before I get the lift in. This way they can fix me up and do what they can with the rotors...I am going to fight them turning them, I want them replaced since when it happens again off warrenty thats what they are going to do.
Let me know how you make out.
I will do the same.

well they said this was normal wear with the composite pads. All in all though my rotors where showing the same wear as a truck with 14,000 miles on it. My dealer has changed service mgrs. alot here latly think i'll go some where else for a second opinion.Allmost every item i took it in for they said no fix.

I got your second opinion. Took mine into the dealer for the exact same problem and the said it was normal on all the 04's. I am not sure that I agree that it is normal for any vehicle's rotors to look like that, but thats the news I got. They did gauge the rotors and found that they look worse than they are. In fact they are very minor.

The dealer is trying to play you. Whether or not it's normal as they
would say they should still fix it under warranty if your concerned about it..

my brakes have squeaked from day one too, its on my list for the 5000 mile checkup. I love hearing the "well lets just turn the rotors" thing too.

My Uncle used to work for ford. Since I will be in Kansas City next week anyway...I thought my uncle and I would take it by the Plant and see what they have to say.

I think that sometimes people (not all) are looking for things to pick apart. The rotor "groove" issue is 100% normal. Most cars and trucks do this, most rims/wheels hide this.

If their is a real problem the dealer has no problem fixing it. That is what they get paid for. Ford will not pay the dealers to "fix" problems that people THINK there is,only problems that are actuality problems. Dealers are there to make money if not from customers then from Ford Motor Company.

Just my misspelled two cents

Has anyone tried any of the aftermarket brake pads on their 04 F150?

If yes, could you post your findings on any reductions in brake dust, preformance observations and maybe a smoother disc surface.

I'm tired of cleaning my rims every 2 to 3 days.

Thanks

Even my dealer said none of the prior year models did this. And I know for sure my 2001 F150 did not do this. When we saw this in years past we called it "Time for new breaks".

Grooves

I traded in my 2003 Ford Explorer (which I pulled 4 wheelers, boats and whatever with it) I ahad 20,000 miles and they were smooth as silk very open wheels like the F-150 (18") at least. The last time I saw rotors like this was my first car 1986 Grand Am. I had to change the rotors on that like every 10,000 miles because they did that. (I used really cheap pads and rotors from autozone... Like the $12.99 pads and the $12.99 rotors... They were 14" wheels, so not much surface area. They were 2 year warranty on the rotors and lifetimw on the pads, so besides the 1/2 hour labor that I put into it, it was a great deal...

My rotors look like the Grand Am rotors after only 3,000 miles... It is only one front and one back doing it bad... Opposite sides too!

I don't understand, Are the brakes not performing properly? Are they pulsating? Or do you just not like the "look" of a .030 groove in your rotor???

BHibbs,
I am personally concerned because 3 are doing it and one is perfectly smooth. That seems like an issue to me. I am not complaining about the truck, I love it, but every new design will probobly have some issues. This just seems to be one of them. I thought forums like this were where we came to share these things and work on solutions.

That’s not normal wear for the rotors to be grooved so soon. The brakes shouldn’t squeak or squeal either. Had my truck since 10-24-03 (built in Kansas City 9-03) and all 4 rotors are smooth. That’s definitely warranty work for Ford.
