Peragon vs Retrax vs Roll N Lock... comments/input please

I am considering either a Peragon or Retrax cover and would like input. I relize Retrax is more expense.

How far does the retrax cover stick out (when open) in the bed? 10"? 8"? 6"? Peragon?

Best places to purchase each?

Any feedback / thoughts on the 2 covers appreciated.

thanks,

Roger

Have you considered an Advance Cover? I love mine. Looks great, easy to install, keeps water out and is only $524. It locks too. It's perfect for me. I can flip the back end up and grab tools, throw a garbage can in, etc. Very useful.

You can see my truck featured on their web site (pretty cool!):

Thanks lariatf150 for the picture of the Advance Cover. The is a good looking truck! I am in the process of buying a black truck too.

My issue is that I will be frequently having bikes in the bed so I would like to get a cover that easily opens/closes & does not take up much of the bed space when open. From what I have been reading, it seems Peragon and Retrax are 2 of the prefered covers that fit this requirement.

I was thinking of going with Retrax, but the space it eats in the front of the bed turned me off. Also the price. Other than that it looked like a great cover. If it didn't take the space in the front and was cheaper, that's what I would have installed. My cover takes no space and is easily removable. Easy to open, close, lock. Some of it is just a personal preference though, as with many things.

rlewis,

I have a Retrax on my SCrew. I thought I had previously measured the canister at 12" x 12", but I just went out and re-measured. I found that the face of the canister actually sits 13" from the front "wall" of the bed. When the cover is fully retracted, it only sticks out an additional 1/2" from the face of the canister.

I've got some pics of the Retrax in my gallery. If there is anything else I might answer for you, ask here or send me an email through my profile.

As far as purchasing the Retrax, there are a couple of recent threads that reference an online site (jnj?) that seems to have really good prices.

There are a lot of good products out there. Take your time in making you decision.

lariatf150,

My dealer charged me $49.99 (+tax) for the bed mat. Good deal!

Definitely Retrax for me. I don't mind loosing the little bit of room in the front of the truck. I haul plywood sheets or something and they will slide under the caniser.

I like the fact the Retrax will roll up and take all of the water with it. Then the water will run into the canister and go out the draintubes without endering the bed. Thus keeping my bed dry all the time.

I looked into the Paragon cover and if you notice the way that it accordians on itself, I believe that you would have to squeegie all of the water off before you open it up. Also with Retrax, you can lock in ANY poistion. Where as Paragon, can you? And if you do, do you leave part of it semi-folded?

IMO Retrax looks much cleaner and does an outstanding job!

Can everyone comment on the weathertightness of their covers? I know most won't withstand a carwash. But how about a heavy thunderstorm?

When I haul large "stuff" I like to often pin it against the front bed wall with rachet straps....seems like this wouldn't work with the retrax...hmm i'm up in the air. I was pretty set on the retrax before....but the simplicty of that advance cover seems nice. Can you get to the stake pockets on it?

They told me you can trim the seals enought to get the stake covers open so they can be used. I haven't done that myself and I don't know if I'll ever use them. Maybe...not sure though.

I haven't seen any water back there yet. It's rained a few times and I washed it a couple times. Should know more when I go on vacation in 2 weeks and hit the highway.

Question for YellowFX4SCrew

YellowFX4SCrew... very nice truck. I am buying a black FX4. Finalize purchase Fri.

Questions.

1. How easy is it to remove the canister? How long does it take? 5 minutes? 10 min? 15 min?

2. When the canister is removed, does it still have a clean look?

3. In your picture w/ the cover open, the canister does not look like it takes up 13 inches from the bed wall. It looks more like 6-8 inches. Is it an illusion on my part? Is 13 inches correct?

4. What do you mean by "the water will run into the canister and go out the draintubes"? Where are the drain tubes? Do they run down the bed of the truck & exit rear, or do they exit just behind the cab?

Thanks for all your help.

Rollnlock Is awsome

They got it rite with this cover I love it. Take a look at my thread on this cover.. and like John & dar said
There are a lot of good products out there. Take your time in making you decision.
The rollnlock takes up less space inside your bed.

rlewis,

These threads should be helpful for gathering info. about Retrax covers:
1) places to buy: retrax guy?
2)This thread discusses the drain tubes: Retrax with Line-X question
3) This thread discusses removal of the unit: Retrax owners , help.
4) Oldie but goodie with lots of general info.: Retrax installed on Scab XLT

More than you might want to know, but a lot of these questions have been discussed. If you do a search for "Retrax" and limit it to just this one forum, you'll see what I mean.

smcFx4, do you have more pictures? How much more $$ is cargo manager? Lastly, did you have to drill holes in the truck to install rollnlock? How many inches of bed space does it take up (openned)?
