Retrax with Line-X question

This question is for all you retrax owners with line-x or other spray-in liners.

I'm getting a line-x liner installed this week. I am also planning on buying a retrax cover.

What I need to know is should I get the line-x sprayed "over the rail" in the front of the bed or will it interfere with the retrax canister sealing against the bed? I don't know if I'm being clear, to put it another way, should I get them to leave the 3/4" horizontal strip at the front of the bed (just under the rear window) unsprayed for the retrax canister to seal against?

Thanks in advance for your answers/opinions

Steve

Steve,

I had the Line-X sprayed over the front rail on my truck before installing the Retrax. There is weather stripping that goes on over the front rail that the lip that sticks out from the canister sits on. The weather stripping is held on in place by adhesive tape...so it would probably adhere a little better without Line-X, but because it is "sandwiched" between the rail and the canister lip, it's not moving anyway.

Bottom line - no problem doing it either way...but if long term adhesion of the weather stripping is a concern (especially if you plan on removing the Retrax for periods at a time) you're probaly best off not having Line-X on the top of the rail.

Thanks John,

That's exactly what I wanted to know.

Is this forum great or what? You can get the answer to just about any question you can come up with plus info on some things you would have never thought to ask.

Thanks again!

Steve

Cost of Line-X

I plan to have the bed of my new 2004 F-150 Screw sprayed with Line-X as soon as it comes in. However, I haven't been able to find any info on how much it costs. Can you tell me how much they are charging you to spray your bed?

Thanks in advance.

I payed $460 canadian dollars after using the coupon listed on the line-x website. I am happy with my purchase, but I am unsure of the cost in american moola.

Zoltan, I see that you're in Raleigh. Which Line-X dealer did you go to? What was your impression of how they handled the job? Just wondering, so I can get an idea of where I'll take my truck when I get it.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Vertigo, just saw your reply. I went to the Line-X dealer on Glenwood Ave ( behind the Walmart) I think its called Line-X of Raleigh. I think the owners name is Melvin or Marvin. They did a real good job. I work with a guy who got his done I guess a couple years ago at that shop and they didn't do nearly as good a job as on mine. For example on mine they backed out screws to certain access areas on the bed rather than covering them up like they did on his. I guess they got there system down now.

Hope this helps, Let me know how it looks

Thank, Zoltan, I appreciate it. When the time comes to getting it done, I'll head over there and check them out. Thanks again!

Cheers.

JohnAndDar,

Few questions?

1. Why do you have Line-X AND a bed rug?

2. The Retrax web site says no drilling. So why does it appear that there are drain tubes going from the canister into the front wall of the bed? They'd have to be drilled, wouldn't they?

3. How is the waterproofness? The site says it's not 100% waterproof. So how waterproof is it?

4. You took a picture of the Retrax lock cover. Does it not come with a cover? Just wondering why it's specifically pointed out.

Thanks,

Guigster

Hi Guigster,
Here are a few answers:
1) I have Line-X, but no Bed Rug. I do have a Ford bed mat ($49.99 and it's extra protection against denting the bed).
2) Yes, the drain tubes need to exit somewhere. They are lined up so that all you need to drill through are the plastic oval plugs in the front wall of the bed. I'm sure those plugs could be replaced easily enough at a later date if you wanted to.
3) I installed my Retrax on 11/15/03 and it's outside 24/7. It's been washed may times and has had it's share of ice and snow sitting on it, too. So far, I have seen no noticeable leaking. It fits very well and is well sealed on all 4 sides. If there's water sitting on top, you'll likely have some run off into the bed when you open it (the slower the better).
4) The lock cover is an "accessory". One of my only complaints is that for the price of the Retrax, the cover should be included, although I suppose those who live in warmer areas probably would not need them. For anyone considering the Retrax, I strongly recommend the lock cover. I had some problems with the handle mechanism getting wet and freezing before I got the cover, but have had no problems since.

I hope that helps.

John

Call Line-x dealer first and get a quote from them. Then Ask the dealer how much. My dealer screwed me and charged me $638. Have read posts where it is as little as $350. Do your research first.

Thanks John, for your quick response and info. I'm still trying to decide on a cover. Retrax is the one I liked the most so far. But I have yet to see on in person. Only pictures and testimonials. I've been pondering whether or not to get one. Many times I don't want a cover. But then there's days like today (68 degrees in NJ on March 1st...amazing), that I'd like to have thrown my golf clubs in the back and gone to the driving range on my lunch hour. It'd been easier with a bed cover, instead of fumbling around the back seat with them.

Things holding me back:

1. Drilling into any part of the truck.
2. Using "stick on" anything on the truck.

If I ever decide to remove anything, I don't want any visible remnants left.

Guigster,

You are welcome. I'm very pleased with the Retrax, but I won't tell anyone that it's the "best" cover. It all depends on personal needs and preferences.

Good luck with whatever you decide. If you ever wanted to take a road trip to see the Retrax on my truck, you are welcome to.

John
