Power Tailgate Lock

Has anyone installed a power tailgate lock? I understand that it will work with the power door locks. Any problems with the install? Any problems with freezing?

I didnt know they made such a thing. What would you possibly need a power tailgate lock for?

For the same reason you have power door locks. I have a Retrax cover that locks. I carry a lot of tools with me. It would be nice to hit the door lock and have the tailgate lock as well. IMO, it should come standard. Why make it lockable and not power??

They are real easy to install. Not sure if they have one out for the 04 model yet but I bought mine from DynoLock at the following site:
http://www.usatruck.net/cgi-bin/stor...ems%3BDynoLock

Its a easy install and 2 wire tap into the lock wires on the passenger side cab. The tailgate will lock when your truck cab locks and unlocks when cab unlocks. I had this installed before I put my ARE Z series cover on with a auto lock also. You can see the install directions for the earlier model years at the above site for a quick reference on the ease of install. Hope you find one for your 04 as they make keeping your tailgate secure a little easier. No problems with freezing either as its tucked inside where not much moisture/water will get to it. Mine hasnt frozen yet and its been 2 yrs.

Wolfman064,
Tailgates and their ease of removal make them easy targets for theft if not locked. A buddy of mine went the mall at Xmas and when he came out his was missing....

I do not disagree - and it is for that reason that Ford placed locks on our tailgates.

A power-tailgate lock is certainly not necessary for me, as I dont have a problem inserting my key and turning it. I do understand (somewhat) why stretch1 likes it. Had Ford taken stretch's wish and made them standard, however, I would be pretty upset that they wasted R&D on such a silly gimic.

Hey Wolf, do you have power door locks? Why not just insert the key and turn?

I do have power door locks and yes I use them. Buy I also dont have the need to take my doors off the truck on a regular basis (as many do with a tailgate). If you like a power tailgate lock, by all means get one. That is no reason to make it standard equipment for the rest of us

Wolf, I just don't understand why Ford would make the POWER door locks STANDARD, but not the tailgate LOCK.

well the tailgate lock is standard. Perhaps sometime in the future they will make a power tailgate lock an option, but even that I doubt it. The reason they dont do it now (I presume) is the additional cost (both in materials and time at the factory). If you notice, the 04s dont even have keyholes on the passenger side handles. They do tons of those little "cost-cutting maneuvers" to keep the price somewhat reasonable (if you call 40K for a truck reasonable )

In any event, the power tailgate lock is a cool gimic, but to me an unnecessary one. I certainly don't want to sound like I am mocking you for wanting one, as you sound like you have a use for it. Me? I am fine with the old-school turnkey approach, as I am not opening and closing my tailgate 100 times a day.

Keep us posted on what you find

i got one thru www.dynolock.net. easy to install. i don't carry tools all the time nor do i have a cover. but i do use the bed for other stuff a lot. so why did i get one...?...imagine going out to your truck taking out keys unlock your tailgate, lower tailgate, put keys in pocket, load stuff, close gate, lock gate, walk to door and doh!!!!! door is still locked (as it should be). For me - it was worth having everything unlock with one button.

Depending on the cost, I would consider it. I had my labrador stolen out of the back of my truck 4 years ago. Not that the lock would prevent that, but someone lifting a 120 lb dog over these high rails isn't as likely as someone just dropping the tailgate.

I lock it now with the key when my dog is back there. A remote lock would be nice...I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it though

Here is a good reason to have this cool little option.
Say you have a atv in the bed with the tailgate locked, you go to unload the atv but leave the truck running, now you dont have to shut the engine off and get the key out, just unlock the doors and boom the tailgate is unlocked as well.

Hey I gota get one of those.

Just got off the phone with Ed France, the gentleman who actually creates these items (I think he said) and he said that they will be in production this Friday or next Monday. So, Feb 6-Feb 9th these will be ready to ship.

They had them done but needed to make a couple of the pins longer and those pins will be in tomorrow. They will provide ALL items needed to make this work. (ties, crimps, gromets, everything except the pliers and SCrewdriver to pull of the tailgate plate.

They carry a lifetime warranty.

Cost is $59.95.

I have placed my order and it is scheduled to ship on monday February 9th.

For those who DO NOT like this idea, thats fine to. For those WHO DO like this idea, enjoy this product and he said to say thank you to all of you who will be purchasing this product.

PS - Thanx for the info FL03.
