I put a full size (3 cushion) couch in the back of my Screw and the bed extender was the perfect size for it. Now if you hauled sectional couches all day...

The legs were touching the tailgate or were beyond the tailgate?

Using the bed extender, my couch fit perfectly in the bed. The arm rest was about 1" away from the back glass and the couch was about 1"? away from touching the bed extender. I put small wooden blocks between the front (cab) bed wall and the couch to keep the couch away from the back glass.

Now that I think of it, I think they make 'full size' couches different lengths...

i agree with that. The legs were actually sitting on the tailgate itself. big A$$ couches...

In any event, i would completely be sold on a SCrew with 6.5' bed, i have just filled up my 6.5' box too many times....

Ok, apparently couches pose a potential issue with the current 5.5' bed. Since I can't imagine we all haul couches on a regular basis, I don't see this as a huge issue. What else do you haul that the 5.5' bed won't handle? Come on..........

Personally, I think the 5.5 with the bed extender is fantastic. Knowing ahead of time what I was going to be hauling, I would decide whether or not to remove the bed extender completely. I hauled couches, bicycles, motorcycles, (2) 36"? wooden telecom reels, mattresses, boxes, etc. The bed extender w/ the tailgate up was the perfect size to prevent groceries from rolling around the bed.

Then again, I chose the Screw because I hauled more than 3 adults much more frequently than something that was between 7 and 8 foot long (difference between 8 ft. bed and 5.5' + 1.5' extender). YMMV

the big deal is that i would simply prefer a larger bed since i use it almost daily. Thats it. All the esoteric crap aside. My dad has a Screw and loves it, doesn't do what i need, and i don't even like the way they look, all personal prefeence, i could make more trips....

Now that line of reasoning makes perfect sense. That's also the line of reasoning I used in making my purchase decision. Well put.

Power Kid,

So I have to spend 45 to 50 thousand dollars for a nice Super Duty then toss the warranty. Then spend another 4 or 5 thousand dollars to have it "dropped", just to have a nice truck that I can use. No offense to anyone here but dropped trucks, especially 4x4 models, are not to my personal tastes.

By the way, the Super Duty does not offer the new 24v v8, full consol w/shifter and the outstanding design of the new 04 150.

And it's not just the 8 foot bed. mister mx would like a 6.5 foot bed on a super crew which is not too much to ask. Other brands can competently put that design on full four door 1/2 tons so there is no reason why Ford cannot, especially if their frames are 9 times stronger as they claim.
- I think you misunderstood me on the lowering comment. The people I know with Supercrew's had their trucks lowered at the dealer, at delivery, for free of charge. The reason: the top of the box was too high for the 5th wheel camper they were towing (reason they bought the truck). The way it was explained to me was that there are different suspension mounting points. Don't know why they all come "high". (PR/Image I guess?)

- I totally agree with you on dropped trucks and mods in general. Hey I don't even like to change the radio!

- Don't you think the Superduty will get the 3v 5.4L shortly after the F-150? Thinking back to 1998: the 99 F150 got the bump to 260 hp but the Superduty (whcih debuted that spring) followed suit about 6 mo later...
(I must admit I always felt sorry for the suckers that bought the Sduty w/235 hp 5.4L during those 6 months!)

-I doubt the Superduty will get the console shifter given it's work truck nature. That being said, the concept Tonka truck had a console type shifter so what do I know???
(right now the Ford truck development guy is laughing as he reads this!!!)

- I fully expect the Screw will have a 6.5ft box within a year of intro. "You gotta know when to hold em." Keep some good news for '05. Really who else has this option? Toyota's 04 crew cab I guess. But given the depth of that box vs. the new Ford, it's probably not much larger by volume... GM doesn't unless you go to the heavy half and the gas pig 6.0L. I thought the new Nissan was 5.6 ft? And don't even try to tell me the Ram Quadriplegic Cab is a true crew cab! Talk about aiming to please everyone and really pleasing no one. I'd take Fords new SCab over that...

Sorry, I meant Superduty's were lowered, not the SCrew.

Too many "supers" here. Hey thats an idea. Why not have a Superman version of the Supercrew that comes in bright blue with a big S logo on the door and hood!!!

(just kidding)

Red Leather guts!!

Ok, as of right now my list of things from this thread that the 5.5' bed in a SuperCrew won't handle is as follows:

1) Large Couches
2) ??
3) ??
4) ??
5) ??

And one comment of "I just like the 6.5' bed better".

With all the negativity expressed earlier in this thread, there's gotta be more stuff you guys have tried to haul and found wouldn't fit in the SuperCrew bed. Come on, share .........

All those things are good and fine. But if Ford would let me haul my 8 foot step ladder with my other things in the 04 Lariat, Life would be grand. There are too many times when I have to leave my truck locked up to leave the tail gate down, plus we get a lot of crummy weather in Southern Illinois. Some of the things I carry are not extremely heavy, just very expensive.

The thought of the deeper bed plus 8 feet makes my heart sing with joy. If they won't let me have it in the Lariat or KR then I sure wish they could have a super XLT or something so I could have the nicer interior.

Power Kid,

Chevy will let you get the 1500 LT supercab with an 8 foot bed, I am pretty sure you can get a full four door cab with the 8 foot bed also, but I don't need a full back seat, so the super cab works fine for me. I have decided ( I think) to wait until the 04's finally are in the lots to make my call, but my next truck will have leather, multi CD stereo and full size bed.

Ford just extended their incentives for another month, they sure make it hard to resist getting one of the last of this current style.

On my S/Cab I put a fibreglass canopy on my box, and put an air mattress in it for camping. I'm not that tall but I still don't fit in a 5.5' bed

The other thing I don't like about the current ('01-'03)S/Crew is the narrow tailgate, a la flareside. Glad to see the '04s went with the full width.
