How much weight did they gain?

How much weight did the new, longer wheelbase F150 gain? They show "curb weight" on pickuptruck.com but it can't be right. It must be GVW. I hope they kept the weight down.

It's my understanding that they picked up almost 500 lbs on the new truck. I'd like to see confirmation on that, of course.

they have enough obvious typos in the specs on that site (like the curb weight) that I'm not believing any of the specs on there. Hafta wait for more specs straight from Ford.

Hopefully not much or I'll ditch her for another model.

500 ... no way

A 500 lb. increase! I don't think so. It's gotta be a typo or somebody's confused data entry.

They added heavier steel reinforcement to the front part of the frame to improve its crash rating. It also stabilized its tenedency to twist resulting in a frame 9 times stronger than before.

500 lbs is correct. Its in the info released Jan. 5 and 6 if a person wants to sift through it all.

Here's a little research I did. The first link shows the 2001 curb weight while the second shows the 2003 curb weight. Both were specifically for the 4x4 SuperCrew with the 5.4L engine.

2001:
http://www.elepent.com/review.php?nr=41
Curb weight 5,032 lb

2004:
http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/auto...ord/specs.html
Curb Weights
SuperCrew Styleside 5.5-ft bed:
5.4-liter 4x2:7050; 4x4 7200

The difference is 2200 lbs. This is not correct correct for the 2004 curb weight. I believe the 2001 is refering to the empty curb weight while the 2004 suggests the GVWR.

However, this still does not suggest the 2004 is heavier than the current model. I still don't get where people are coming up with the 500 lb. difference. If so the extra engine power is negated by the extra weight. Help me out here.

grishfish,
I am puzzled by the overall length a little bit from the 2004 link you posted. They list 224 for the screw with 5.5 box, which is ok. They also list it(screw) with an 8 ft box, wtf is that about, gotta be a misprint?

Let me just say this, for anyone that has picked up a 45 lb. Olympic weight plate - 500 lbs. is like eleven (11) plates. Now, that's alot of weight - for six extra inches on the cab, boxing in the frame, reinforcing cross members and stiffing the door sills. I sure hope the 04 didn't pick up that much weight! It will effect it's performance in all areas.

Let's just hope it's not that much. I, for one, want to FEEL that extra hp and torque!

type

Marc,
I agree with you, that must be a typo. It's clear that there's no 8 ft. box with the screw.

good point

Fineride,
Good point. I agree completely.

I think there are more materials in the 2004 but not 500 lbs. worth. Reinforment and reducing torsion forces in the frame come more from materials application techniques than by throwing heavy steel at the problem.

If someone told me the truck was 150 lbs heavier, I might believe it, but even that would be a stretch.

Thanks grishfish - I looked up the curb weights on the Expy according to Consumer Guide - you got a close call if the new F150's is similiar.

2002 Expy curb weight 5345

2003 Expy curb weight 5569

Looks like a 224 pd. gain on the 2003 Expy. However, the Expy did not gain any wheelbase! And the 04 F150 gains six (6) inches.

waiting game

I guess we'll have to wait for Ford to publish the numbers later this year.
