According to the reps that I talked to at the St. Louis auto show there are only eleven prototypes available, and they are darned careful with them. If one of those babys got dinged up they wouldn't let an outside bodyshop within 2 miles of it. One of your legs must be longer than the other right now because someone has pulled it pretty hard.

As far as when the truck will be available, there is speculation across the board. Fords website says available this fall but many other sources of information have it being produced as soon as early June. The order date speculation runs from as early as late April (hope hope) to July. One salesman told me March but that strikes even an optimist like me as unbelievable. If you watch my drive way you will know when the first one is available to the general public.

Grab your digital camera and high-tail it over to that body shop. If it really is an '04 you'll be the first guy to ever post crash pics of one. If it isn't, take a picture of the guy that called you and post it... as the bonehead of the week.

I have to agree. Ford would treat it like a U2 had just gone down for unknown reasons.

Production on the regular and supercab starts on June 9. They will hold them for approx 30 days (batch build) to make sure they are getting it right-definitely do not want any more Explorer launches.

The supercrew starts 30 days later. You will see them sometime late July, early August.

Like Nick said-no way in hell is there a 04 up at a local body shop!

Nick,

I got the information from a launch specialist from the Virginia assembly plant who was at the detroit show. This guy knew just about everything on this vehicle.

June 9th is the start of production for that plant. They shut down for a week in July per UAW contract. Supercrew production is not handled at that plant. I think it comes out of Louisville? He said production started approximately 30 days after his start up-early July?

Nick do you still want that grill

Titanc, Good information. Lets wait and see which model I end up with before I commit to a grill swap.

My dealer predicted ordering in May, and arriving at the dealership as early as July or as late as September.

He also warned that Ford has a habit of filling the first orders to all the American dealerships before they fill them for Canadian dealerships.

The rep at the Chicago Auto Show today said production starts in June with fall delivery.

They had a SuperCrew on the turntable, and the Lightning "concept" also on the turntable.

Some other notes:

My favorite of the show was the Ford GT. That thing is awesome! I would love to see on of those next to the original GT-40. It would be hard to tell them apart.

The '04 Mustang was there as well. When I 1st saw the photos, a while back, I didn't care for it. In the photos it looked too much like the Mustang II's for me. Seeing it in person help, but I thing the grill needs some work. It needs the gills, for lack of a better word, in the headlight openings like the originals. The taillights are a nice touch as long as the turn signals are sequential a`la the Shelby's.
