engine compatibility

ok guys, thanks for all your help diagnosing my engine noises. I finally pulled the oil pan and found the source. Metal shavings in the oil pan and a lot of slop in one of my connecting rods. Also when cleaning up the valve cover I found an old sticker that placed the engine back to 97. It was the original with 320k+ miles on it. Now I am going to be putting a new one in this weekend. I have a 97 Romeo 4.6L 4x4 automatic. I want to have it done by Sunday night so I'd like to know what considerations I should be making when shopping for engines. I'd like the 5.4, but I think it's gonna be too much extra headache.

I'm going used. My local junkyard will sell me one for $220. Now the question is 4.6 or 5.4. I'm hearing the 4.6 has less problems.

Because of the electronics same for same will be the simplest course to take. If you go with a 5.4L I believe you'll need the computer and maybe harness too or at least reprogramming of the computer. I am not positive about that, but I'm sure someone else will chime in with better info as to what would have to change for a 5.4 swap

So, as for the 5.4, I have read on here that you can use the 4.6 wiring harness and computer, although you need a tune to take full advantage of the added horrsepower. The shady part is the exhaust. All that is said anywhere is that the exhaust "may not bolt right up". Can someone who has done the swap chime in and let me know what they had to do to get it to work? I have a decent lift so I have some play. Maybe if I heat the downpipe?

We have a very detailed article in the Articles and How-To's forum on the 4.6 to 5.4 swap. It's more involved than you may think. You also have to be aware of the differences between PI and non-PI engines, both in the 4.6 and 5.4. The 5.4 went PI in 1999, the 4.6 went PI in I think 2001. There's also some minor differences between Romeo and Windsor engines.

2006 f150 5.4 harness and pcm installed into 2007 5.4 f150

Gentlemen,

I i'm building an 2007 harley f150. its a frame off resto. pcm and wire harness have gone missing.

I'm considering using 2006 harley f150 harness and pcm.

is there anything to consider when attempting this or has anyone done it already on a truck?

Kdawson

$220?
is that a engine you can hear run before buying?

I've bought a couple cheap engines that I rolled the dice on and got lucky both times but I don't like to do it that way.

I'd definately go 4.6 if yo need to drive the thing monday morning.

Yeah,$220. No i can't hear it run. I am rolling the dice. It's a well known local junkyard. Hundreds of vehicles out there, I just have to find one with a decent looking 4.6, remove it and pay $220 at the front counter.

if you're removing it yourself, or even if they are, at least spin it over to be sure nothing is bound up or clashing together.

This place drains all fluids before putting the vehicles on the lot. If you still think it's ok to turn it over with no oil in the engine, I'll bring a compression tester and check that too. What do you guys think?

I think he meant turning it manually.

That's what I meant also. With a socket on the crank.
