2000 f150 help.

I have a 2000 ford f150 4.6L 2wd long wheel base. I just recently got my oil changed and the mechanics told me that my gasket in the rear end was going out and it would be another 240$ to fix it. I told them no thank you and I would try it my self. The pumpkin on my rear end is got 10 holes. I purchased a rear main seal set today and 5 quarts of gear oil. This is the seal I purchased I'm pretty sure I need another seal that looks like this . Also they told me my rear end would take up to 4 quarts of gear oil to fill it back up once I was finished is this correct?

That looks like the rear main seal to the block/crank
Not sure what seal you are referring to in the rear differential, axle seal?

For $240 they couldnt have been talking about the rear main seal on the block.

I'm confused. Did they mean maybe the gasket for the differential cover? That's the only gasket on the rear end that I'm thinking of. Everything else is seals.

You have the 8.8" rear, and it holds less than 3 quarts of lube. You must use 75W140 fully synthetic, if you bought something else take it back. Also, if it has the factory limited slip, you need to go over to Ford and get a 4 oz bottle of friction modifier.

What's leaking? The cover gasket or the pinion seal?

I got a 10 hole gasket and permatex pulled the cover off drained the oil out cleaned the inside and inside cover real good permatex the gasket and bolted it back up filled it up running like a champ no leak. GLC u were correct on the type of gear oil but as far as capacity mine held 5 quarts. I'm not sure if its stock it's an 8.8 but it held every bit of 5 quarts at 18$ a quart plus the gasket 90$ all together. Do it your self jobs are much cheaper

If you got 5 quarts in there, you either have an aftermarket cover or you have it way overfilled.

The plug is on the side of the gasket little more than halfway to the top. You can't fill it up, it starts to run out the plug hole when it's level with it. Guess that's where
It needs to be. The permatex helped great. Bout a 45 min job for normal mechanic.

Are you possibly confusing pints with quarts? A 8.8 rear holds 5.5 pints.

The factory did not use a gasket, they used RTV only.

Now - do you have a limited slip rear? If so, did you put the additive in?

I'm not sure glc, about the limited slip. When I was working on it yesterday the tags were gone or had been removed. It should say in my owners manual huh? If not I could take it to a ford dealership and find out for sure. Havnt put any additive in yet till I know. After I got the cover gasket replaced and box filled up with gear oil I cranked it up and took it around the
Neighborhood for a min or so and it's been parked since.

All you have to do is look on the door jamb sticker. Under AXLE there is a 2 character code. If its letter then number (example - H9) it's LS. If it's 2 numbers (example - 19) it's not.

Axle: 19 is what it says. Meaning its not L.S. So no additive needed. Appreciate all the help glc. Made things a lot easier.
