Must be the season for shopping for these trucks and I'm no exception.
I'm going to look at a one owner trade at a dealership tomorrow. The truck has 106K on the clock and appears to be well cared for. The dealership is not familiar with any previous service; it's a Chevy dealership. The only info I can find so far is from the carfax report that indicated what I'd consider the normal maintenance stuff.

I'm somewhat familiar with the spark plug/insert issue but, I won't be able to actually visit with the previous owner to see if this was ever an issue. Short of that, is there anyway I can check for myself to see if this repair was accomplished?

Any and all advice is appreciated.......I'd hate to run into any problems later that i could have investigated prior to purchase.

If it's a late 03, it may have the upgraded 8 thread heads. With 106k, I'd give it a 50/50 chance that it has even had the plugs changed at all.

The only way to tell is pull the plugs and look in the wells for evidence of inserts.

 

glc, thanks for the advice. I'll take a look at the build date in the morning......I prefer to be informed so, I truly appreciate the reply.

 

The build date is not conclusive - it's the head casting numbers. However, I think it's safe to say if the truck was built before 3/03, it's got the old heads. I know someone with a very early 04 NBS with a 4.6 that only has 4 threads.

 

Well, I bought it!!
So, now I'm a new supercrew owner and soon to be former owner of a 98 extcab.....that one is going to my oldest son...(long story).

The build date on the 03 is 03/03........
I'm going to do a complete decode of the door tag but i do know it has 3:55 LS rear...

Should be a nice, fun truck....
