Coolant leak
Coolant leak
I think that is what I have since my dads truck overheated today and when I opened the hood there was steam shooting from what looked like under the intake manifold and behind the alternator. Is it the heater hose that is uner the manifold and also is there a way to bypass it for a quick fix or do I have to remove the manifold to get to it(if so is can someone tell me how to do it
fyi it is a 2000-01 f150 with a 5.4

Yep, O-rings went bad on the water pump stem, -there's two. It's either that or the manifold cracked. The model years 2000 was the first year of the composite for the 5fours. They would crack, passenger side front water jacket.
UNLESS! I doubt it , but, Ford did use a small heater hose connection behind the pumps on their reman blocks. If that's a factory re-manufactured block, then it's a heater hose most likley. Other than that, it's a hard line that slides over the water pump stem with two O-rings.
You'll obviously have to pull the manifold. Even if it is a hose or O'rings, make absolutely sure the manifold didn't crack. Allot of them do.

well I looked into it with a flashlight and I couldn't find any immediate cracks but I did see coolant on the passenger side fuel injectors what would that tell you
and as to whether it was reman or not I dont think it was since we bought it brand new off the lot

Sounds like the manifold. If it is you'll need a new one. There's no fixing that one. A used 03 composite or 99 Aluminum manifold is choice for used. The 03 composites are made from better materials.
Used: Go here and type in your zip to find one close to home -

Other than that, - dealership or dorman has them as well.

Yeah, like Jbrew said, either check in the valley under the intake manifold where the water pump stem is, or the intake manifold. It typically cracked near the passenger side where the composite meets the metal cross over. Either way, the intake has to come off. Simple job and a good time to clean the throttle body and elbow, IAC, change the plugs and clean things up. If you have any questions on how to remove those things, it's pretty straight forward. A good tip is to clean things as best as possible before you remove anything, using compressed air. Don't want debris falling down into the heads or anything. Also is to make sure and relief the fuel system when removing the fuel rail and have some rags handy to catch spilt fuel. Otherwise, it's just unbolt and remove things. When you get to the point your ready to reinstall, there is a torque sequence for the intake manifold that is very important. But for now, find the leak and go from there.
well I was able to fill the tank back up with coolant and leak sealer and then drove the truck the hour drive back home and it did not over heat or leak coolant, I also put a dye in there so I am going to keep an eye open and see if I can find something
