Adding cruise control in base model '02?

Hi. I've searched this forum about having cruise control installed, and most of what I've found involves newer model trucks, where you can just buy either a new steering wheel, or the cruise buttons, then have the dealer flash the PCM, and you have cruise. Is that possible to do with an '02? Is there a way I can check to see if I already have the proper wiring installed and just need a new wheel? I really prefer the OEM cruise as opposed to aftermarket, and if I can just get a new steering wheel, that will save me a fortune.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try local scrap yards and pick up a whole column with the wheel. It will have the required harness and the wheel switches. You will also need the cruise servo and harness. Can you tell if your truck has the cruise servo harness?

I had a 2002 XL with no cruise and it was a major PITA to try to get cruise added. A local truck place said they could do it for like $1,000! I even called a friends who is a Parts Manager at a local Ford dealership and he couldn't get me an OEM replacement wheel. The best option I found was to either do an aftermarket mod to the stalk (where the turn signal is) OR trade out the wheel for an OEM wheel from a junkyard (PITA finding one), finding a dealership who understands flashing new codes and then going that route. Frankly, I had such a hard time finding a good way to get it done that I ended up selling the truck!

The 02 has been around for over 9 years so the junk yards should be full of steering wheels.

OK... this is not based on our F150's, but...... when I worked in the salvage yards, Our (previous) '04 Dodge Caravan had blanks in the steering wheel for cruise. You did not need a new steering wheel, but rather the switches off one AND the clockspring. Then you would just add the servo, cables and whatnot to complete the project

Phil.... I wonder why the link you show.... it is More for that with a base steering wheel as opposed to the leather one??

So is that link the kit that the dealer would use to put it in?

If my truck did already have the servo and harness, where would I look to find it? Would I need to buy the servo and harness new, or could I potentially get that from the junkyard, too?

But odds are that a new steering wheel with the switches will not be the only thing I need to get, right?

I would think that you could get Everything from a salvage yard and plug n play. Look into that option first. It may save you some big bucks

When I changed Lightning steering wheel into my 2003 XL, I had to replace the clockspring as well. Anyway, it seems that at least some of the wiring already exists, since the cruise buttons in L steering wheel are now lighted up!

I am also interested to know what are the components required under the hood needed for the cruise control.

Okay, total idiot question here, but what does the servo look like, and where would it be located under the hood? I've tried googling it, but all I can find are threads about servos, not anywhere I could buy it just to see what it looks like.

Oh, and is a module and servo the same thing? I tend to find those interchanged when doing searches.

I can't remember why I took this pic, but here it is ...

It's located between the fuse box and the intake at the inner fender on my '99 4.2. The cable in the pic runs to the throttle body.

At least you can see the part number clearly. Now maybe you can search for it that way.

Ford part #9C734
Looks like it fits the F150, F250, Expedition, and Navigator.

Good Lord where did you find the cars it would fit? I googled the part number and am not getting anywhere. I'm sure I can still find it in a junkyard, though. BUT, if it fits all those vehicles, does that mean that I can pull it from all those and it still work in my truck? Isn't it supposed to be engine specific? Or do those all have models with the same engine? I'm a 4.6L V8
