EGR Probs

So my check engine light has been on for a couple weeks now. I had it scanned at the local parts store and it gave me a egr code. They say in order to find the exact reason i need to put it on the computer at the ford dealership and they want 100 bucks to tell me whats wrong. Someone told me it's a sensor that goes out frequently on these vehicles. Has anyone had this prob in the past? Is their a cheaper way to find out whats wrong with it?

Yes. Get a piece of vacuum hose and place it on the EGR port and literally suck on the hose. If your engine's rpms bog down then your EGR is working fine and the electrical parts like DPFE or EVR vacuum solenoid need to be looked at. If your engine does not bog down or stall rpms then 1 of 2 things is happening. Either 1 your EGR valve does not function properly and needs to be replaced or 2 the EGR ports that run under the intake need to be cleaned out to allow proper EGR flow. They tend to clog pretty bad.. check this out.

They should look like this(well cleaner, but you get the idea )

Well, it's either a 401 or 402. Yea, do as b2 instructs. These 4six's plug those holes solid, -very common. Auto zone

Wait a minute, I stand corrected. They do have it listed on another list -

P0404 EGR Circuit Range/Performance.

I found it on SVT's list. Strange code tho, haven't seen that one come up with these models. I'd still test valve operation and TB elbow ports. Could be the DPFE. I have a vid for checking that and ref #'s.

Ok so stupid question, I have done a lot of my own repairs over the years. But i've never worked on a ford, i've only owned 2 thus far!! Is what B2 told me to do a hard job? Don't know anything about a ford motor always been a chevy man. So what's a good starting point for me to tackle this job? Only thing i've done on this truck is replace a couple coils and plugs, so this will be my first real attempt at wrenching on a ford...

You installed an EGR valve right? So either unbolt that or remove the EGR pipe flange nut first, before removing the elbow. If you haven't cleaned the elbow/EGR ports since you've owned the truck, I wouldn't worry about testing the valve operation yet. The 4.6L is notorious for plugging up the ports, - they need to be cleaned anyway.

I have a 5.4L , it's a little different (not much). Bolts circled in yeller are what your after. There's four that hold the TB elbow down, -you'll remove all 4 as the final step in removal.

I'm sure you can figure out how to get to this point once you take a look at it -

Like I said , this is a 5.4L. The 4.6L has a smaller EGR valve and the IAC may be in a different location on the throttle body.

There's a "How To" on this site that may assist, - here -

https://www.f150online.com/forums/ar...ttle-body.html

But yea, b2 has the best shot for yuh (above), -his post/pic is a 4.6L and it shows the ports that get plugged.

There's not much else to it.
