If the code/s have not been cancelled, do that next to see if it or another one comes back.
You won't miss anything by trying this.
It may have been a false code or miss read by the last one to read it.
I have seen false codes set before from certain ignition issues that caused it.
I checked on Ford service disc and there is no 404 code listed for any model car or truck with a gas motor, at least as of 2002.
Super Chips code copy does list that code but it may apply to some other setup not a stock motor as normally found in these trucks.

Yea, I found it here Blue - http://www.svtlightnings.com/scantoo...tc%20codes.htm

It's a Ford list. I haven't looked on the 2002-2004 Service Info Workshop, Wiring (EVIM), PC/ED, Oasis DVD yet. Player being used currently, but yea, I haven't seen that code on the other lists.

I agree , clear the KAM or erase the dtc to see if it reappears.

jbrew, pic in post #15 is quite the eye-opener. I don't see any dirt or dust anywhere & its a hi-rez pic. This is an engine used in a teaching environment, right? Dang, i have clean dishes dirtier than that.

Was the DPFE sensor. Ford product only and 65 bucks... I still haven't replaced it and they tell me that's why im only getting 15mpg. Other then that nothing is wrong unless your like me and hate that freaking light on my dash on blast... Anyways, that is the problem, i just dont have the extra cash to replace it right now.

How do you know, you meter it ? You can get them at any third party parts supplier now. The dealership would be the best choice though.

Jbrew,

Cool post. My Check Engine Light just came on yesterday in my '98, and O'Rielly Auto Parts said the code was related to the EGR. This weekend I will pull the throttle body and clean.

Thx!

The 4.6L is notorious for plugging up the ports, - they need to be cleaned anyway.

I have a 5.4L , it's a little different (not much). Bolts circled in yeller are what your after. There's four that hold the TB elbow down, -you'll remove all 4 as the final step in removal.

I'm sure you can figure out how to get to this point once you take a look at it -

Like I said , this is a 5.4L. The 4.6L has a smaller EGR valve and the IAC may be in a different location on the throttle body.

There's a "How To" on this site that may assist, - here -

But yea, b2 has the best shot for yuh (above), -his post/pic is a 4.6L and it shows the ports that get plugged.

There's not much else to it.
