Truck vs. mail box

well coming home from work today i hit brick mail box. i took the shortest way home which included a 2 lane rural road. coming over this hill i noticed a car going north bound was partical in my lane. so i moved over on to the shoulder to avoid a head on accident. the shoulder the turned into paventment where this rich neighborhood starts. there is a large height difference in this surafce change. i hit the bump causing my truck to start fish tailing. trying to keep control and not hit on coming cars i couter steered and slamed on my brake. final i my counter steering didnt help and i supn out of control into this brick mailbox. the mailbox was thrown off its foundation i spun around another 180 degrees and stoped. after 45 mins of waiting the cop finally filled out his police report and gave me a ticket for "failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident"

so now i get to go to the insurance company tomorrow to see if i have full coverage or not. (hopfully i do or it looks like im going to get in and out of my passanger door until i graduate next spring)

That sucks man, I took out a fire hydrant last week, and I also blame it on another vehicle. Hopefully you have full coverage, is the truck paid off?

It's a dam if you do, dam if you don't. Rule of thumb is to never leave your lane. If you stayed in your lane and the other guy hit you, it's his fault and ticket (or worse)... you leave your lane and have an accident... it's on you. I know it stinks but what are ya gonna do unless your neck snaps to photo memory his tag number

I know in my county all mailboxes have to be able to break away when hit. I know there were a few around here that the building inspector got mad at and made them change. Just something to find out. Too bad about the truck.

Looks like a snowy/icy road - how fast were you going?

i couter steered and slamed on my brake.
Driving lesson - that's the WORST thing you can do. Put it in NEUTRAL and let the wheels roll when you countersteer.
