ALTERNATOR!!!!!! my battery light came on as the alternator was dying, and it was not recharging the battery. i found myself stranded in the middle lane of traffic during rush hour on a freeway in denver with a stone dead battery and alternator. after a tow back home, picked up a premium rebuild from NAPA and a new battery problem solved. seriously do not wait on this one...

Bring it into autozone or advance. They'll test it for free.

An old-school test you can do at home is to start the truck up and let it run for a minute or two. Hook up a handheld voltmeter to the battery. 13.5-15 volts? Good. Now have a helper switch on the headlights. The voltage should momentarily drop, but recover to what it was or nearly was before within a second or two. If it takes a long time or never recovers, your alt is on it's way out. Replace it ASAP.

I agree that there seems to be a charging problem. But keep in mind that it could be the regulator rather than the alternator itself. This will have essentially the same effect as an alternator that's not producing enough electricity. Either way, get it diagnosed soon or you're going to get stranded.

Sounds like the problem was a voltage regulator. Glad you got it fixed.
