how many miles?

i had a 97 f150 xl 4x4, 5 spd. by far the most reliable truck ive owned. when it got totaled it had 182k and change and still ran great. i was wonderin if any one else was getting high mileage with that motor and if they had a low maintenance schedule as well as i did, i replaced the brake shoes and pads, a tie rod i busted four wheeling, so i changed both sides, u joints and i custom built an exhaust, tires and a serpentine belt, but other than that the truck had everything original, just changed the fluids and oil often. even had the original plugs, the clutch still grabbed hard with no slipping and tranny seemed fine too. it had a lot of highway miles but still wasnt babied, it towed regularly, hauled fire wood, stone, granite and cow manure. it was a great work truck, just not to powerful with a trailer or load. it got totaled when a guy had a diabetic seizure and hit he head on doing 80 mph and i was doin 50, he went under me and flipped me into a hi-tension telephone pole that i busted into 3 pieces, luckily i had my seat belt on. the truck was said to be totaled from the insurance company, to much to fix it for what it was worth, but when it went to the scrap yard the motor was pulled and is still being used today 3 years later from what the guy at the yard said. any one else have this luck with the little v6?

Hmm it's not really a "little" v6. Anyhow, I got 106k on my '99 till I traded it. Ran perfect.

That truck only cost me like $400 total in any types of major repairs in 100k, at 100k it only cost me a total of around $2000 for total maintainance. Excellent can't describe it.

My '07 is working like a champ... don't plan on having any problems with it.

Oh, and sorry for the loss of the '97.

I've had two 4.2's now. My first, was a 97 with a manual tranny. I had 120K on it when I traded it in. No problems other then the coolant leak issue that year motor had. I now have an 02' 4.2 with 95K on it. It still runs like new and I had it custom tuned by Troyer. It's definatley not the fastest truck on the road but it's a tough truck and performs great with that custom tuning.

Well mine has 165,000 KM's and running strong, just changed serpintine belt, plugs, wires, fuel filter and regular oil changes. Also had tranny serviced every 50 to 60k. No problems at all.

By far the highest miles????

I currently own a 1999 with 269,878 as of 04/04/2007, purchased Dec 28, 1998 with 4 miles. After 2 alternators, 4 sets of front brakes, 4 sets of tires, 1 radiator, numerous pairs of wiper brakes, thousands of $$$ worth the gas, and regular schedule services...
Still runs good, plus the a/c works as good as day 1 (never serviced). Always stick to OEM parts and needled maintenance.

This truck travelled 9 states, survived tropical storm Allison in Houston, TX 2001 after being flooded, evacuated Katrina in '05 from Lafayette, LA and Rita in Houston the same year.

Will take a picture of the odometer one of these days.

I had a 1998 Xl with the V6 that I traded in for my 2005 XLT and it had 160,000 miles on it then. As of december the new owner said it has 205,000 on it and still no issues. I also have a friend who has had his 1997 XL 4X4 since it was new and it has 230,000 miles on it with the original cluth and never had an issue with the coolant leaks. I think that other than the gasket issue on the early 4.2 V6 the motor is one of the better engines ford has built. I would have gotten another V6 if I didnt need more power for towing and the V8 rumble with the dual exhaust.

high mileage

Just bought a 98 150 short box 2dw a couple of months ago. Shows 260,000KM as of yesterday and runs perfect. Body is rock solid with no rattles or rust problems. So far I'm delighted. Mileage with the 4.2 isn't what I expected it to be...but it's not all that bad either. No idea what the repair history is (came off a lot) but someone REALLY took care of this old girl.

Cheers - Gus

I currently own 1997 XL V6 Auto with 138,000 miles - I've had $800 worth of front and upper gasket issues and replaced the alternator at 105k. Other than that just regular stuff. The bench seat is getting a bit thread bare. I bought it used in 2000 with 50k on the clock. I plan on driving it for another 102k minimum.

I hated the 10th generation when it cam out, but have grown to appreciate them. I custom ordered a 98 long box supercab XLT with a 4.6 / 5spd - that was unbelievably nice. I would have bought it a lease end but FMCC wanted stupid money for it. I bought the above 97 instead.

my tranny held out til 185k, at the same time i did the balljoints...other than that just general maintenance...i've got 206k miles on her now. she's held up pretty good considering the owner before me was a contractor (truck had a pintle hitch on it when i bought it) and my wife and i use it to tow about 6k pounds of horses and trailer most of the summer.
