Strong coolant smell?!?!?!?

yes, just another problem this truck had when i bought it, and i am just getting around to fixing them. The truck has always had a stron smell of antifreeze when running, inside and out. I know it's leaking, but i haven't found where yet. Has anyone else had a similar problem? And if so, where was your leak?

The only time I could smell coolant from my truck and couldn't find the leak it was the freeze plugs.

Heater Core?

My truck had a bad heater core and would fog up the windsheild when I turned the heater on. Also you could smell it.

If your not seeing anything on the ground then its probably the heater core.

Its really easy to fix on F-150's. Its behind the glove box. Not too expensive. About 50-70 bucks for a real FORD core.

Where are the freeze plugs?? I have noticed little droplets of coolant on the front differential pumpkin. I am pretty sure the smell is all year long, but isn't as bad in the summer. My windows don't fog up when the heat is on either.

Check your thermostat gasket

also check the small hose that runs by the throttle body that has coolant running through it.

On mine they're right above the oil pan. They look like the end caps for a small poster tube. I don't knoe how many there are, and since it cold here, 60's, I ain't getin all dressed up to crawl around and find out.

Actually I have a six and you have an eight so it wouldn't matter anyway.

5.0 Water pumps often leak when they go bad. On the bottem of the pump there is a little hole and sometimes the water comes from that. I have two mustangs and had the same problem with that. My truck so far hasn't done that. Yes they all have 5.0's

Hey 1depd, 60's is cold???? LOL, i was out in the garage, non heated or insulated, with a jacket on, in weather in the teens, ripping the door panels off the truck to fix a window, lol. I'd love 60's here so i could really work on my truck. And all dressed up, man people here would be near naked in weather like that...well not really, but that is tank top or short sleeve and shorts weather here.

Yeah, i'll have to check the pump, that sounds like it could be the problem.

I love the 5.0's!!!!

stong coolant smell

two thing i would look for is the water pump leaking out of the small hole on the bottom which is just like a check valve and when the go bad they leak while running. also look for coolant leaking either down the firewall by ur heater core or onto the passanger floor board that's a good sign of a bad heater core
