06 5.4 throttle problem

Ok i have done my searches in the forum but not quite same problems. When i am driving along the rpm's go to idle and when i push on gas pedal i get nothing. It is like the throttle position sensor dies and i can't do anything til i stop and shut off engine, when i restart the engine everything is fine. My truck has done this about three times, and now, after the throttle dies, the truck has now resorted to just quietly dying. I pull over and turn off the key and restart the engine and then it's fine again. It only does this once in a while. any suggestions what it could be? I am out of factory warranty but still have powertrain warranty. No one seems warrant the electronics with a powertrain warranty.

Have you had the codes read? This happened to me and what is happening is the engine is going into failsafe mode and the Throttle Actuator Motor is being turned off. This makes your gas pedal dead until it resets. This is usually due to the engine dieing because of a dirty throttle body. After my TB was cleaned, has not happened again.

I have done a search and cant find what I am looking for elsewhere, so I will post it here. There are times when I stomp my truck and it really comes alive making the "four barrel" sound and then there are times when it just seems slow without the hauling @$$ sound. The truck has 58K original miles. Any Ideas?

No i have not had the codes read bluejay, i guess i probably should though. None of the dash lights stay on. at first i get the wrench light and then the engine quietly dies and then all the dashlights come on. i restart the engine then its fine , no lights. its weird!

I've had it go into "limp" mode where the engine is still on (power steering) and where it completely dies. Usually happens in the winter when it's 20* and below. I take off the intake and throttle body. Clean the throttle body w/ cleaner and the MAF as well. Put it back together and I'm golden again.

I've mastered the art of dropping the truck into neutral, waiting a few seconds, and then restarting and popping it back into drive without having to pull over.

I've had the same thing happen twice with my 2005 5.4. I talked with the stealer's service dept on the phone and he told me the no. 1 cause was a bad throttle body ($600 or so) or possibly the potentiometer at the gas pedal. Mine has done this twice like I mentioned in 48k miles. Its been over a year since the last occurence.

my 2005 5.4 did this a few times last year, it would either go into limp mode or just die at the stop lights. I cannot remember the code but I had to replace the TPS. When I took the original one off, there was lots of plastic material worn away where that stud from the TB goes into the TPS, sort of wallowed out. No issues since the replacement, the replacement I noticed had reinforced that area. I only had 28K miles on it when I had to replace it.

You aren't going to get anything covered under the emissions warranty unless it causes you to fail an emissions test.

What kind of emissions test can it pass when the throttle doesn't work?

My truck went into fail safe mode twice recently. Based on advice I got here I cleaned the throttle body and, while I was at it, the MAF sensor. No problems since but I have not driven it that much either.
