What should I do for Tires???

I am farely new but I have a few questions. I have a 2000 Ford F150 4 x 4 with the 17" tires.

Here is my question. Should I keep the 17" stock rims and get some larger size tires?? I was looking at getting some Nitto Terra Grapplers, but they only make them in the stock 265/70/17. Is there a larger Off Road style tire I can get on in a 17??

Second option is spend a lot more and buy a set of 16" rims. If I do that what width rim should I get and what is the tallest 16" tire I can put on the rims without have to cut, lift, or doing anything extra??

If anyone could give me some info that would be great.

I think 285 70 17 would be a good choice.... BFG makes a tire in that size and it looks nice.

If you opt for the 16in you could easily fit 285 75 16 with no lift or cut.. And I would go with 16x8

Mine are 285x75x16
Also welcome to the site.....

Thanks for the replies. I was just looking through my new 4 wheeler mag and saw the BFG 285/70/17 and I am going to go with those. They look really nice and then I don't have to get new rims. Thanks for the welcome and you two have some sweet *** trucks.

Ya man, go for the BFG 285/70R17's. I have seen them put on a stock truck and they look great. I think the BFG All Terrains are the best looking tires out there, except of course for my Mickey T. Baja Belt's!

I don't understand why Ford does not put them on the factory 4x4's. They put 275/60R17's on the 4x2's, so why not a bit wider for the people who will be going off road and really need it? Why do they put the damn 265/70R17's?????

Ok sorry, it's just that I was thinking about buying a new King Ranch 4x4 recently and was annoyed with the thought of having to buy new tires right away....

Good to hear they look good in person. I just read a ton of reviews over at Tire rack and I decided to go with the BFG Mud Terrain T/A KM's in 285/70/17. I hope these will fill up the wheel wells better than stock and give me an aggressive look. The only thing is I will just have to make sure I rotate them every 3000 miles so they last a while.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Here is shot of mine with the GoodYear 305/70/17 MT/R's. The MT/R is much better looking tire and the 305 is an excellent size.

I thought 285 was the tallest I could go. I see you don't have a body lift, so did you have to trim anything to get those in there??? Also how do they ride, do they rub at all when going off road. If they don't rub then I will go with the 305's over the 285. Please let me know.

Thanks

i run 305s on a 16 inch American Racing Atlas chrome wheel. Would suggest 285 on your 17 or 305s if you go to a 16in wheel. pics in my gallery.

buffalotr8: OK. You really sold me on the Goodyear tires. I was going to go with the BFG's, but I really like the look of those MTR's. I would like to see a pic of your truck from the side if I could, also I need to know what size to go with. I will get the 305's if they don't have any rubbing issues, if they do then I can just go with the 285's. They look good also. Let me know.

Thanks

Thanks for the comments. Here is a picture of my truck from the side. The picture isn't that great, however, go to my gallery and see all of the other.

The 305's are awesome. I do not have a lift and I did not crank the torsion bars. There is no rubbing whatsoever. The look of the MT/R's is much better that any AT and the 305 size is fantastic. I highly recommend the goodyears!

Those look really good. I am going to get the 305's after looking at yours. I am just really affraid about them rubbing. Have you taken your truck off road at all??? I do a little mudding every now and then and I don't want them to hit the fenderwells when I hit a rut or something. Have you had them rub when you hit a bump or something??? If there are no clearance problems then I am off to the tire shop soon to get some 305's.

Thanks for the help.

I haven't done any offroading at all. I have about 5000 km on the mt/r's and I have never had them rub or bind. I have been on gravel roads, snow covered, bad highway, good highway and not one problem.

Of course they is a bit of noise to them on dry highway but not a big deal. My dealer also said you can expect at least 100,000 km for wear.
