Bigger tires and inexpensive lift options
I have a '98 F-150 Supercab 4X4 which is in need of new tires, brakes, and shocks. It is currently running with 265/70/r17 BFG All Terains and I'd like to go to the more aggressive look of the BFG Mud Terains, but the smallest ones they make for a 17" wheel is a 285/70.
I read the post about the 33X12.50's and I suppose this is about the same. I don't understand the metrics of the tires all that well, but I am under the impression that the 285/70/17 is slightly larger than a 285/70/16 which someone said fit the stock truck just fine.
Does anyone have any idea if these tires will fit the stock truck? From the looks of the 265's it looks like the 285's might rub under the front bumper which I assume I could just cut if need be (I'd rather not).
Also, what's the most inexpensive way to lift the truck just slightly? Maybe an add a leaf kit for the rear, but what about the front? I'd love a 3 - 4 inch suspension lift, but I don't have the $2,500. I'm not a mechanic, but I can work a wrench... barely.
By the way, this is a GREAT web site for Ford truck owners!

Performance Accessories 2" or 3" body lifts. Under $125 at summitracing.com.
You can fit 33/12.5/17 on there stock without problems. With the 3" body, you can fit 35/12.5/17.
If you need pics, take a look at my gallery. I have 3" body and 35" Procomp MT. I couldn't be happier with this lift. I got the tires buy 3 get 1 free at 4wheelparts.com. Basically I got the mudders and lift for the same price as just the stock goodyears at Sears.

tire sizes
Here is how you figure it out...
substitute metric width size in question.
substitute "series" 70 or 75 or ??
substitute wheel size as needed.
285mm X .0394 = 11.22" tread width
11.22" x .70 (70 series) = 7.854" height from wheel to O.D.
7.854" x 2 = 15.709" (because the tire goes all the way around the wheel) LOL
15.709" + 17" wheel size = 32.70" tire Diameter
therefore 285/70/16 = 11.22" x 32.70"
and 285/75/16 = 11.22" x 32.83"
which I have on my stock 2000 f150 4x4 lariat, and fit with no problem and your size is slightly smaller... see "help wheel stuck" thread.
