Unhappy Went from 16" to 17" wheels and have a shake at 40 MPH and 63 MPH.

I upgraded from 16" wheels and tires to 17" wheels and tires and now have a shake in the truck at around 42 and 63 mph. Has anyone else experienced this problem and what did you do to correct it? I have had the wheels checked and the tires and had to have two tires replaced and everything else is ok. Any suggestions?

mine came with stock 16's and at certain speeds on certain freeways it will shake, and its because of the suspension and my heavy duty tow package. It is only in certain spots because of the grooves and at 72mph with the grooves....

What width are the new wheels. National Tire and Wheel on their website recommends against wheels greater than 8" wide due to vibration problems.

It seems though that there are some on this forum with wheels that are wider.

Good luck.

The wheels are balanced. They are all brand new including the tires.

spin the tires and look for high spots. may be out of round slightly. even though they are new, it is still possible. also make sure they only used 1 weight per side. i've seen some people put 2 weights on one side and that caused problems.

Goodyear has replaced both rear tires and still have the problem. The new tires are fine. Good suggestion though.

If you still have the old rims/tires in the garage or storage put them back on and give them a spin around town. Has to be something with the rims or tires, since that is when the problem started. You sure your u-joints are okay on the drive shaft?

Get them rebalanced. I got some brand new F1's balanced by the goodyear store, and after a few months, the vibration didn't go away, so I had them re balance the wheel/tires, and it all went away. You might check the allignment on the truck also. If you do get them realigned, try to get them static balanced.

I agree, sounds like you need to get them rebalanced.

Watch them when they rebalance the tires. You can have a tire that is out of round and still balabce them. When they spin the tire look to see if the tire bounces up and down on the machine.

If it does, have them break the tire down and spin it on the rim 180 and try again. If you still have no luck rotate it 45 untill you are happy with the results.

Also spin just the rim on the machine and make sure it isn't warped......

I had a vibration between 40 and 45 MPH until last week. (I have the 17 in wheels) The vibration was present w/ the stock tires, the tires replaced under warranty, and the tires I replaced the junk GYs ATs w/. I had them blanced and rotated multiple times to no avail. Always vibrated between 40 and 45. I had it to two different dealers multiple times - the first one was clueless, the second one said it was tires out of round. I jacked it up put in gear and I watched the tires have excessive runout both horizontally and vertically. Went back to the tire dealer, and he said it wasn't that bad for agressive tires.

Last week I got a couple free loads of gravel (loaded and all). I aired up the tires to 50 psi all the way around and went to get the gravel. I had them put a good load on the first load, but the truck wasn't quite loaded to the frame. The truck was sitting on the frame after second load was loaded. After unloading and driving it around this weekend my vibration is gone, both w/ 50 psi and w/ 32 psi in the tires. I have no idea how or why, but my vibration I'd been fighting for 25k miles is now gone.
Any ideas?

What is even more ironic, is the truck went out of warranty 2 weeks ago.

All too familiar to me. I put on a new set of tires (all 4) and had the aforementioned vibration at 40 and 65. Took it back to the tire place 4 times to have them rebalanced, but after a few days it would return. So I had a Ford dealer check out to see if there was an alignment problem. They told me a tire was out of round. I bring it back to the tire shop and tell them this and they suddenly agree with me, but now the tire is worn out too much to be covered 100% by the warranty. So I had to pay an adjusted price. Even though the previous 4 times they told me it was ok, once I pulled out the Ford receit stating the tire was out of round they somehow changed their minds.

So my suggestions are...
1) Don't believe what they tell you
2) make sure you get this taken care of before the tire manufacturer warrenty expires
3) make whoever balances/rotates your tires verify the tread depth each time. In my case, I could not prove to the tire shop that my tire was out of round before my warrenty expired.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

P.S. stay away from Pirelli A/T's!!
