Question Going from 16" to 17"

I need some help guys. I am wanting to get a set of the 17" Factory wheels to replace my 16" wheels. I talked to a guy at the dealership and he said that I can't do that because it will mess up my ABS sensors and cause my check engine light to stay on and screw up my speedometer. I knew the speedometer would be affected, but I can get that recalibrated on a 99' right?

Has anyone heard of the abs sensor thing?

I currently have 235/70/16's and I love the look and the height of the F-150's with 17's. Should I give up or is this possible?

Thanks,

Jamie.

Yeah, the dealer can reprogram for the speedometer. The largest diameter they can program for is for the ORP 265/70R17's which would be equal to 265/75R16.

With larger diameter tires, it will be a little harder for the brakes to stop the truck in same distance, they will have to work a little harder. The ABS should never be a problem as long as all 4 tires are the same diameter. As for the check engine light...???

There really is no real advantage to factory 17" wheels, but if thats what you really want........

The tire choice is more limited too. I should know... I have them. Just put on some 275/70/17 Goodyear AT/S tires.

These large diameter rims will make the same overall height tire look smaller on your truck. With a smaller diameter rim you'll have more sidewall on identical height tires which makes your tires look "meatier". Just me 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply. I just love the look of the chrome 17" wheels. I see 20" rims and other larger sizes on F-150's around here and thought that it shouldn't be that big of a deal to move up to 17's. The guy at the dealer seems to have thought differently.

Anybody else have an idea on the check engine light coming on if you increase wheel size?

Thanks.

Never heard of check-engine light coming on with different tire/wheel combos. You'll notice sluggish shifts, etc if the computer isn't reprogrammed.

If you're not going over 275's on the 17's I don't really see a problem.

Anything over that and your hwy ride will go down the drain. It'll wander a bit and follow grooves in the road. Noticed that with my 275's but they had 45psi in them from the Goodyear dealer. Brought it down to 40 and rides nice now. AT/S are noisier than RT/S but not by much.

he's an idiot. You can always change rim size. Yes, it may effect your braking and such as in physical stopping power, but not by much, and it will definetely not affect your truck electronically...look at all the expys and 150s with 18-22s...

i am changing my 17" factory wheels to 18" this weekend, to bad you are not near houston texas i would make you a good deal. look at all the trucks with aftermarket rims and tires, i dont think it is a problem, as far as the brakes not working, they seem to adjust when i put weight in the back.

Say BrotherDave, How good of a deal are we talking? I am always up for a road trip. Drop me an e-mail jamie_mcadams@yahoo.com. Maybe we can work something out.

One other thing I wanted to know is if there might be a problem with the 17's rubbing since mine came with 235/70/16 and I was thinking about factory 265/75/17's ? My buddy with a 4x4 F-150 said he thought they might rub.

I know everyone wants a different look but i just got my tires and wheels on and i could not be happier. didnt want 20" because of issues with bending them and ride quality. also didnt know how pulling a trailer would work. so i desided on 18" x 8" with michilan 285/60/18. i have to disagree about the bigger rims making the tires look smaller (just my opion)

Sorry for not replying for so long I have been on vacation.

To answer an earlier question my truck is 2wd. It came with the stock 235/70/16 and that is why I am trying to upgrade to a larger wheel to get a little higher off the ground.

Since it is a 2wd is why my buddy with a 4 x 4 thinks 17's might rub. Anybody have an idea?

Thanks.

Interesting, I just upgraded from 16's to 17's last weekend. First I was told the samr abs crap by my tires dealer when I was buying 16's--funny my 16 size, 235 70 is the most expensive, wonder why he would say that. Any way My light hasnt come on and I stop just as well, the speedo is very interesting--it gets more off the faster I go @30 it is1-3mph off but at 75 it is 6-7mph off. Used my GPS to tell how off it was. I love the stance and lift that it gives the truck. Tires are a little harder to come by but if you are on ebay there are some great deals on 17 and 16" tires. The shifting is a bit weird--I havent got my computer edone yet--Will the dealer do that free (wishfull thinking) or is there a better way. What all has to be redone on the comp?

Rubbing not out of the question

I just bought a new 2002 F150 on Friday. I purchased a FlareSide Regular Cab with the XLT Sport Option. The Sport Option includes 17" Wheels. When making a tight turn yesterday, I heard my tires rubbing. I am going to have to do some more research into this, and will be contacting the dealer.

If I had to guess, I think someone at the original dealer (truck was traded to local dealer for my purchase) might have pulled a midnite swap on the wheels and put an inappropriate set on the truck as replacements.

I'll be taking a closer look at the rims and tires this weekend when I get home.

TC
