replacing spare tire lock on bumper
new to me 2008 scab. Thought I would drop the spare and check the air, etc.
used ignition key to remove the plug. dropped the tire, washed it off, aired it up and winched it up in place.
glad I did this in daylight in my garage not on some dirt road at midnight.
tried to install the lock thingie and could not get it to lock in place.
I'm afraid to really bear down on the ignition key to turn the locking tabs.
any ideas guys?????
thanks, rob

With the lock off the truck and in your hand, will the key turn it? If so, you'll see the two tabs on the back sides turn with the key. And, if it turns in your hand, there's something blocking those tabs inside the bumper. Feel around in there, it should be smooth I think.
My lock can only be installed one way, so that the cover opens downwards. If the previous owner filed off a ridge in the top of the lock, or enlarged the opening in the bumper, it's possible you are trying to install it upside down. I don't know if it can lock this way but if the cover would open UPWARDS, it's upside down.
Finally, if the key won't turn the lock with it in your hand, you should be able to remove the lock cylinder by removing the circlip at the back. Possibly, if you can't figure out the problem then, a locksmith could help you.
It's a pretty simple mechanism.
